Comparative Impact of Bacillus spp. on Long-Term N Supply and N-Cycling Bacterial Distribution Under Biochar and Manure Amendment

Muhammed Mustapha Ibrahim et al.

Summary: There are concerns about the negative environmental impacts of excessive N fertilizers used in agriculture. This study explores the potential of biochar and manure to improve the effects of Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus licheniformis on N-cycling enzyme activity, the distribution of indigenous N-cycling-related bacteria, and long-term N availability for the growth of Nageia nagi. Results show that biochar induces a potential N-cycling enzyme activity and increases N availability, while manure does not have the same effect. Bacillus spp. inoculation increases soil bacteria diversity but also leads to the relative abundance of some key nitrification-related bacterial taxa, resulting in higher N-cycling enzyme activity and N availability.

Feasibility of early fertilization of maize with 15 N application to preceding cover crop

Letusa Momesso et al.

Summary: Early nitrogen application on live cover crops or their residues can meet nitrogen demand and increase the yield of subsequent cash crops in tropical regions. The conventional method of nitrogen fertilizer application allows higher nitrogen recovery and maize yield.

Biochar amendment benefits 15N fertilizer retention and rhizosphere N enrichment in a maize-soil system

Jie Zhang et al.

Summary: Biochar amendments increase root biomass, total crop N uptake, and urea N retention in soil. Rhizospheric soil promotes urea N retention and biochar application further enhances this difference. Biochar application also slows down the mineralization of particulate organic nitrogen (PON).

Field-applied biochar-based MgO and sepiolite composites possess CO2 capture potential and alter organic C mineralization and C-cycling bacterial structure in fertilized soils

Muhammed Mustapha Ibrahim et al.

Summary: Agricultural soils are a significant source of anthropogenic CO2 emissions, and finding sustainable materials to capture CO2 in these soils is crucial. This study produced biochar-based MgO and sepiolite-nanocomposites that showed potential for CO2 capture, leading to reduced CO2 emissions and increased organic carbon mineralization.

Biochar interaction with chemical fertilizer regulates soil organic carbon mineralization and the abundance of key C-cycling-related bacteria in rhizosphere soil

Muhammed Mustapha Ibrahim et al.

Summary: The addition of biochar and fertilizer influences the diversity and abundance of carbon-cycling related bacteria in soil, impacting global carbon cycling. While initially increasing dissolved organic and inorganic carbon in soil, the combined treatment eventually leads to a reduction in carbon content.
