Magnitude, direction, and drivers of rhizosphere effect on soil nitrogen and phosphorus in global agroecosystem

Andong Cai et al.

Summary: The rhizosphere, the active soil area for material transformation and energy flow, plays a crucial role in soil biochemical cycling. However, the global impact of the rhizosphere on soil nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) cycling dynamics remains unclear. By analyzing 1063 observations and 15 variables from 122 literature sources, we found that the rhizosphere increased available N (AN), available P (AP), and total P (TP), while reducing nitrate N (NO3-N) and ammonia N (NH4-N). The effect on total N (TN) was not significant. These findings have significant implications for improving soil nutrient utilization efficiency and modeling nutrient cycling in agricultural systems.

Patterns and driving factors of litter decomposition across Chinese terrestrial ecosystems

Andong Cai et al.

Summary: Litter decomposition rate (k(DD)) decreases with increasing latitude and is influenced by climate variables, litter quality, soil properties, and experimental duration, with average k(DD) values of 1.30, 2.23, and 3.35 x 10(-4) degree days(-1) in forest, grassland, and cropland ecosystems, respectively. Climate variables have the biggest impact on k(DD), followed by soil properties, experimental duration, and litter properties.

Root effects on soil organic carbon: a double-edged sword

Feike A. Dijkstra et al.

Summary: There is a paradoxical phenomenon where roots can both drive SOC stabilization leading to SOC accrual, and SOC destabilization causing SOC loss. The proposed Rhizo-Engine framework highlights the importance of considering both microbial turnover and the soil physicochemical matrix in understanding root-driven SOC dynamics. This framework aims to provide a more holistic approach to studying plant root effects on soil carbon sequestration and the sensitivity of SOC stocks to climate and land-use changes.

Plant rhizodeposition: A key factor for soil organic matter formation in stable fractions

Sebastian H. Villarino et al.

Summary: The formation of soil organic carbon is poorly understood, with uncertainties remaining for the contributions of different inputs to the particulate and mineral-associated organic carbon fractions. Rhizodeposition has the highest efficiency in forming MAOC, while root biomass inputs have the highest efficiency in forming POC. Rhizodeposition and roots play opposite but complementary roles in building MAOC and POC fractions.

Effects of biochar application on crop productivity, soil carbon sequestration, and global warming potential controlled by biochar C:N ratio and soil pH: A global meta-analysis

Hu Xu et al.

Summary: Biochar application has different effects on crop yield, soil organic carbon, and global warming potential when applied alone or combined with chemical fertilizers. The carbon to nitrogen ratio and soil pH are the key factors influencing the impact of biochar application on crop yield, SOC, and GWP. The study suggests that biochar properties and soil pH are crucial in determining the effectiveness of biochar application in improving crop yield, increasing SOC, and reducing GWP.

Rhizosphere effects of woody plants on soil biogeochemical processes: A meta-analysis

Dayong Gan et al.

Summary: Rhizosphere effects play a crucial role in controlling soil biogeochemical cycling in forest ecosystems, particularly in belowground carbon and nitrogen processes. The positive effects of rhizosphere on various variables were consistent, with differences observed in the impact on soil nitrate-N between arbuscular mycorrhizal and ectomycorrhizal associations. The variation in rhizosphere effects on carbon and net nitrogen mineralization rates was mainly influenced by bulk soil properties rather than plant functional types and climatic factors.

Prolonged drought imparts lasting compositional changes to the rice root microbiome

Christian Santos-Medellin et al.

Summary: The study shows that drought stress can alter the composition of rice root microbiomes, with certain important bacterial groups significantly enriched during drought and maintaining a lasting impact even after rewatering, leading to increased instability in the root microbiota.
