Abundance and community composition of free-living nematodes as a function of soil structure under different vineyard managements

Steffen Schlueter et al.

Summary: Organic farming aims to improve soil fertility in vineyards through a variety of practices. This study found that nematode abundance was mainly influenced by habitat constraints, while community composition was primarily governed by resource availability. Organic management in interrows resulted in lower diversity and higher maturity compared to conventional management, with differences between the two systems being more pronounced in interrows than within vine rows.

Response of subsoil organic matter contents and physical properties to long-term, high-rate farmyard manure application

Frederic Leuther et al.

Summary: The application of farmyard manure (FYM) to improve soil properties and crop yields is a common practice, but its effects on subsoils have been rarely studied so far. This study found that only high rates of FYM application over long periods can increase organic carbon (OC) content in subsoil, mainly due to fresh, easily degradable particulate organic matter (POM). The increase in subsoil OC content did not affect hydraulic properties significantly.

Chemical staining of particulate organic matter for improved contrast in soil X-ray μCT images

Peter Maenhout et al.

Summary: The degradation of organic matter in soil depends on its spatial location. Alternative staining agents were evaluated for enhancing contrast of organic matter in CT volumes, with PMA showing potential as a replacement for OsO4.

Denitrification in soil as a function of oxygen availability at the microscale

Lena Rohe et al.

Summary: Predicting nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions formed by biotic denitrification in soil is challenging due to the complexity of processes involved. This study found that considering oxygen supply and demand together improved the prediction accuracy of N2O and N-2 emissions. Using X-ray CT imaging analysis to quantify soil structure in terms of anaerobic soil volume fraction (ansvf) provided new perspectives for estimating complete denitrification in soil.
