A case for associational resistance: Apparent support for the stress gradient hypothesis varies with study system

Amy E. Adams et al.

Summary: The stress gradient hypothesis (SGH) suggests that ecological interactions become more positive as environmental stress increases, with associational resistance being a key example. Our meta-analysis found strong support for the SGH in studies involving bacteria, plants, terrestrial ecosystems, negative interspecific interactions, adults, and survival under stress. However, cross-disciplinary communication barriers currently limit further exploration of the SGH, and future research should expand beyond interspecific plant competition and include multifactor stress.

Decreased spatial variation and deterministic processes of bacterial community assembly in the rhizosphere of Phragmites australis across the Middle-Lower Yangtze plain

Rujia He et al.

Summary: The study reveals significant differences in spatial distribution and assembly processes of bacterial communities between bulk and rhizosphere sediments in aquatic ecosystems. Bacterial communities in rhizosphere sediments showed higher α diversity, lower β diversity, and significantly lower spatial turnover than those in bulk sediments. These findings emphasize the importance of the rhizosphere in influencing bacterial community assembly and the role of different ecological processes in governing microbial diversity over different scales in sediment environments.

Aridity decreases soil protistan network complexity and stability

Qing-Lin Chen et al.

Summary: Aridity is the best predictor of protistan community composition, increasing the importance of stochasticity in assembly and decreasing community-level niche overlaps. Aridity may also reduce network complexity and stability, highlighting the need to consider protistan networks in projecting ecological consequences under climate change scenarios.

Response of soil fungal community composition and functions on the alteration of precipitation in the grassland of Loess Plateau

Qian Huang et al.

Summary: The study shows that changes in precipitation can affect the composition and function of soil fungal communities in the grasslands of the Loess Plateau. Although precipitation changes did not alter the diversity index of soil fungi, it did change the composition and function of dominant fungal groups.

Climate warming dominates over plant genotype in shaping the seasonal trajectory of foliar fungal communities on oak

Maria Faticov et al.

Summary: The study found that warming plays a more important role than plant genotype in shaping the seasonal dynamics of the foliar fungal community on oak trees. As the season progresses, fungal species richness increases, evenness tends to decrease, and the community composition changes significantly.

Assembly processes lead to divergent soil fungal communities within and among 12 forest ecosystems along a latitudinal gradient

Yong Zheng et al.

Summary: Research on soil fungal communities within and between 12 natural forests revealed distinct patterns among whole fungal communities, arbuscular and ectomycorrhizal fungi, with noticeable separation among forests in tropical, subtropical and temperate climatic zones. Despite large-scale community turnover being influenced by specific environmental drivers, differences among soil fungal communities within forests remained significant even at local scales.
