A one-pot route to tunable sugar-derived sulfonated carbon catalysts for sustainable production of biodiesel by fatty acid esterification

Samuel Lalthazuala Rokhuma et al.

Summary: In this study, carbon-based solid acid catalysts with high density active centers were successfully synthesized via a one-pot hydrothermal carbonization-sulfonation method at low temperatures. The catalysts demonstrated great significance in the production of biodiesel, allowing efficient conversion of oleic acid with the optimized catalyst and conditions. Furthermore, the catalyst showed potential for recyclability by complete re-sulfonation.

Acetalization of glycerol over sulfated UiO-66 under mild condition

Yuanyuan Jiang et al.

Summary: Sulfated metal-organic framework, with its strong acid strength, large surface area, and regular pore channels, has received significant attention as a versatile heterogeneous acid for various catalytic applications. In this study, sulfated UiO-66 (UiOSO3H-x) was successfully synthesized by direct oxidation of 2-mercaptobenzoic acid substituted UiO-66. The structure and properties of the synthesized UiO-SO3H-x were comprehensively characterized, and it was found that sulfonic acid groups were uniformly dispersed within the UiO-SO3H-x framework. UiO-SO3H-0.2 exhibited excellent catalytic performance and stability for the synthesis of solketal from surplus glycerol, surpassing other tested solid acids. The highest TOF of each acid site in UiO-SO3H-0.2 reached 676.0 h-1, and it demonstrated versatility for the acetalization of glycerol with other ketones/aldehydes.

Solketal synthesis from ketalization of glycerol with acetone: A kinetic study over a sulfated zirconia catalyst

Julian A. Vannucci et al.

Summary: A series of acid catalysts were synthesized from a commercial zirconium oxide sulfated with a 0.5 M H2SO4 solution by wet impregnation. The sulfated zirconia calcined in air at 400 degrees C (Zr-S-400) showed the highest activity and stability for glycerol conversion, with a molar ratio S/Zr = 0.23. The estimated activation energy of the reaction based on a developed kinetic expression was 88.1 +/- 8.9 kJ/mol.

Monetization of the environmental damage caused by fossil fuels

Ather Hassan et al.

Summary: Fossil fuels account for more than 80% of the world's energy consumption and have greatly impacted the atmosphere. Studies have shown a significant correlation between fossil fuel consumption, CO2 emissions, and economic growth in Pakistan. The cost of damages caused by fossil fuels has increased, with people paying a substantial amount for taxes, health services, insurance premiums, and low living standards.
