Catalytic improvement of biomass conversion: Effect of adding mesoporosity on MOR zeolite for esterification with oleic acid

Glaucio J. Gomes et al.

Summary: Catalytic processes are crucial for the production of biofuels from biomass. The desilication of MOR zeolite (H-MOR-D) was found to enhance the esterification of oleic acid, indicating that the catalytic activity in the MOR structure is not solely dependent on the density of strong acid sites.

Enhancing Hydrodeoxygenation of Bio-oil via Bimetallic Ni-V Catalysts Modified by Cross-Surface Migrated-Carbon from Biochar

Yujian Wu et al.

Summary: In this study, biochar-modified H beta/Ni-V catalysts were prepared and tested for the atmospheric HDO of bio-oil to produce aromatics. The catalysts showed higher HDO activity and aromatic selectivity, with the pine nut shell biochar-modified catalyst exhibiting the highest aromatic yield. The synergistic effect between PB and H beta/Ni-V, including surface migration of carbon layer and enhanced active sites, led to improved hydrogenation and deoxygenation activities, ultimately enhancing the HDO performance of the catalysts.

Hydrogen-free hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol and 2-methyl-furan over Ni and Co-promoted Cu/γ-Al2O3 catalysts

Munsuree Kalong et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the catalytic transformation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol and 2-methylfuran without the need for hydrogen supply using bimetallic NiCuAl and CoCuAl catalysts. The bimetallic catalysts showed higher yields and selectivity compared to monometallic CuAl and NiAl catalysts, attributed to the stronger Lewis acidic centers on their surfaces. Additionally, the CoCuAl catalyst exhibited lower catalyst deactivation and carbon deposition under an H-2-free atmosphere.

Enhancement of catalytic esterification by tuning molecular diffusion in sulfonated carbon

Lili Huang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the enhanced catalytic esterification of hollow sulfonated mesoporous carbon spheres (HMCS-S) by modulating the molecular diffusion ability. By increasing pore size, especially for long-chain fatty acids (C-12), the catalytic activity of HMCS-S is improved. Results show that HMCS-S has a higher TOF value compared to sulfonated carbon with different morphologies, attributed to ideal molecular diffusion ability based on the texture and surface properties of HMCS-S.

Reductive Conversion of Biomass-Derived Furancarboxylic Acids with Retention of Carboxylic Acid Moiety

Yoshinao Nakagawa et al.

Summary: This review discusses catalytic reduction systems of FCA and FDCA without reduction of carboxyl groups. Furan ring hydrogenation to THFCA and THFDCA easily proceeds over Pd catalysts. Hydrogenolysis of one C-O bond in the furan ring produces 5-HVA and 2-hydroxyadipic acid, while two-step reactions can lead to the production of adipic acid.
