Advances of Ionic Liquids and Deep Eutectic Solvents in Green Processes of Biomass-Derived 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural

Lifang Chen et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the recent progress in experimental and theoretical studies on the dehydration of carbohydrates to produce 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) using ionic liquids (ILs) and deep eutectic solvents (DESs) as catalysts or solvents. It also provides an overview of catalytic transformations of HMF to downstream products using ILs and DESs. The challenges and prospects of ILs and DESs for the production of HMF and its derivatives from biomass are discussed.

Summary: The powerful independent gradient model (IGM) method has limitations in graphically studying weak interactions. In this article, an improved version of IGM, called IGM based on Hirshfeld partition (IGMH), is proposed to overcome the shortcomings. The rigorous physical background of IGMH is demonstrated through various application examples, showcasing its important value in intuitively understanding interactions in chemical systems.

Elucidating the transition between CO2 physisorption and chemisorption in 1,2,4-triazolate ionic liquids at a molecular level

Xutao Hu et al.

Summary: Capture of CO2 is crucial for achieving carbon neutrality, and high-performance CO2 capture involves a transition between physi- and chemi-sorption. However, the mechanistic insights required to tune this transition are poorly understood. In this study, a series of 1,2,4triazolate ionic liquids were used to capture CO2, and the transition between physi- and chemi-sorption modes was studied and understood, providing insights for tuning CO2 capture.

Toward reactive extraction processes for synthesizing long-chain esters: A general approach by tuning bifunctional deep eutectic solvent

Ruizhuan Wang et al.

Summary: This study presents a rational approach for the selection of deep eutectic solvents (DES) in the synthesis of long-chain esters. Novel halogen-free DESs based on triazole and p-toluenesulfonic acid (PTSA) or benzenesulfonic acid (BSA) were prepared and characterized. Four dual solvent-catalysts were determined for esterification reactions with different ester carbon chain lengths. A rational DES selection strategy was formulated based on thermodynamic analysis and experimental results.

CO2 Chemisorption Behavior of Coordination-Derived Phenolate Sorbents

Xian Suo et al.

Summary: CO2 chemisorption via C-O bond formation is an efficient method in carbon capture, especially using phenolate-based ionic liquids as sorbents to produce carbonate products. The study utilized alkali metal cations coordinated with crown ethers to construct phenolate-based systems, avoiding the involvement of active protons in CO2 chemisorption. The CO2 uptake capacity and reaction enthalpy were significantly influenced by coordination effect, alkali metal types, and alkyl groups on the benzene ring.
