Nitrous oxide in diesel aftertreatment systems including DOC, DPF and urea-SCR

Yongjin Jung et al.

Summary: The study investigated the formation of Nitrous Oxide (N2O) over urea-based Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems using exhaust gases from a 3.4-liter non-road diesel engine. It was found that the formation of N2O was closely related to the SCR catalysts, the ratio of NO2 to NOx at the SCR inlet, and the SCR inlet temperatures. Depletion of NO played a crucial role in the start of N2O formation.

Possibilities of Ammonia as Both Fuel and NOx Reductant in Marine Engines: A Numerical Study

Carlos Gervasio Rodriguez et al.

Summary: The environmental impact of shipping is a significant challenge in today's world. Decarbonizing marine fuels is a key priority in achieving climate neutrality. Free-carbon fuels, especially in dual-fuel mode, are of particular interest for marine engines. This study examines the possibilities of ammonia in marine diesel engines and finds that increasing the proportion of ammonia can lead to significant reductions in carbon emissions, but at the same time, it increases nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. To address this issue, the study proposes a second ammonia injection during the expansion stroke to further reduce NOx emissions.

Experimental and numerical investigation of nitrogen oxides reduction in diesel engine selective catalytic reduction system

Damian Kurzydym et al.

Summary: The article presents a study on the reduction of nitrogen oxides in diesel car SCR system. Both experimental and numerical methods were used to analyze the system and compare it with European emission standards. The results show that the final design of the replacement part effectively reduces NOX emissions.

An experimental investigation of the performance, emission and combustion stability of compression ignition engine powered by diesel and ammonia solution (NH4OH)

Michal Pyrc et al.

Summary: The study found that co-combustion of water ammonia solution with diesel fuel increased ignition delay period and combustion duration, as well as raised heat release rate. Combustion involving ammonia caused deterioration in engine stability, but did not exceed permissible stability levels. Additionally, the addition of water ammonia solution reduced nitrogen oxide emissions, increased carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emissions, with no significant changes in carbon dioxide emissions.

Progress in green ammonia production as potential carbon-free fuel

Ghassan Chehade et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the challenges, opportunities, and potential of using ammonia as a carbon-free fuel, and examines recent technological solutions to overcome barriers with production, storage, and usage of green ammonia. Hydrogen and ammonia differ in energy density and potential explosive concentrations, with ammonia presenting its own set of challenges that require further research.
