Hierarchical zeolite for biomass conversion to biofuel: A review

St Mardiana et al.

Summary: The development of biofuel production from biomass is promising, with zeolites emerging as suitable materials for catalyzing biomass conversion. However, the diffusion limitation issues caused by the micropores in zeolites can be addressed by developing hierarchical porosity. Research on hierarchical zeolite catalysts is continuously growing to enhance their performance.

Pretreatment of HZSM-5 with organic alkali and cobalt: Application in catalytic pyrolysis of lignin to produce monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

Tao Jin et al.

Summary: In this study, HZSM-5 zeolites pretreated with organic alkali and cobalt were used as catalysts for the production of monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from lignin via catalytic fast pyrolysis. Cobalt modification was found to enhance the acidity and production of monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The addition of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide regulated the mesoporous structure of the zeolite and prevented over-treatment. The HZSM-5 pretreated with TPAOH showed the highest monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons production under the optimal conditions.

One-step synthesis of gasoline fuels from γ-valerolactone with high selectivity over Cu/HZSM-5 bifunctional catalyst

Hongtao Wang et al.

Summary: A simple and efficient method for the high-selective conversion of GVL into gasoline fuels over designed Cu/HZSM-5 bifunctional catalyst in a single fixed-bed reactor was reported. The interfacial sites composed of metallic Cu and proton acid of HZSM-5 played a key role in determining the performance by providing a spontaneous C-O bond breaking path of GVL.

Progress on the lignocellulosic biomass pyrolysis for biofuel production toward environmental sustainability

Anh Tuan Hoang et al.

Summary: Biomass plays a critical role in meeting the increasing global energy demand and sustainable energy development goals. The study extensively reviewed the impact of key pyrolysis parameters on the distribution of products from lignocellulosic biomass. Factors such as carbon and hydrogen content, economic assessments, and technical orientations for biofuel production were discussed to optimize current pyrolysis technologies and produce high-quality bio-oil. Further research and awareness of lignocellulosic biomass in pyrolysis technology can lead to the production of sustainable and renewable carbon-neutral fuels.

Sustainable production of benzene from lignin

Qinglei Meng et al.

Summary: Efficient production of benzene from lignin is of great importance but has not been realized. In this study, a strategy is developed to transform lignin into benzene over RuW/zeolite catalyst in water, with a high yield of 18.8% on lignin weight basis. This high-performance protocol paves the way for efficiently producing benzene using lignin as the feedstock.
