Cylinder-to-cylinder variation of knock and effects of mixture formation on knock tendency for a heavy-duty spark ignition methanol engine

Zengqiang Zhu et al.

Summary: The knock characteristics of a high-pressure port fuel injection heavy-duty SI engine fueled with pure methanol were investigated using experimental and numerical methods. The study revealed that injecting fuel during the intake stroke with high pressure can effectively mitigate knock by promoting the formation of a more homogeneous and lower temperature mixture. The combustion speed, thermal efficiency, and knock tendency were found to be influenced by the injection timing. Additionally, there was significant variation in knock tendency among different cylinders, which was attributed to differences in the fresh air charge.

Experimental evaluation of performance of heavy-duty SI pure methanol engine with EGR

Zengqiang Zhu et al.

Summary: The performance of a heavy-duty pure methanol engine was evaluated and compared to the original natural gas engine through experiments. The results showed that the pure methanol engine had higher brake thermal efficiency and better tolerance to exhaust gas recirculation. Lower NOx and CO emissions were observed in the pure methanol engine, but higher HC emissions were recorded.

Alcohol lean burn in heavy duty engines: Achieving 25 bar IMEP with high efficiency in spark ignited operation

Senthil Krishnan Mahendar et al.

Summary: The study found that ethanol and methanol have high knock resistance and can achieve high peak IMEP in a wide load range. By increasing the air excess ratio, it is possible to further improve the peak IMEP of gasoline and ethanol. Diluted combustion shows promise in reducing knock and achieving diesel baseline load.

An experimental study on methanol as a fuel in large bore high speed engine applications - Port fuel injected spark ignited combustion

Arne Guedden et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that the substantial benefits of methanol on smaller passenger car engines can also be achieved on larger engines. Preignitions were not a concern, however engine knock was found to be the limiting factor for engine load attainable. The results show potential for further optimization and efficient NOX emission compliance without exhaust gas aftertreatment.

What fuel properties enable higher thermal efficiency in spark-ignited engines?

James P. Szybist et al.

Summary: The Co-Optimization of Fuels and Engines (Co-Optima) initiative aims to maximize energy efficiency and renewable fuel utilization by developing fuels and engines together. The Central Fuel Property Hypothesis (CFPH) is used to assess the potential benefits of candidate fuels regardless of their chemical composition. A thermodynamic-based assessment quantifies how six individual fuel properties can affect efficiency in spark-ignition (SI) engines, leading to a unified merit function for assessing the fuel property-based efficiency potential of fuels with conventional and unconventional compositions.
