Boosting syngas production from corncob tar reforming over Ni/MgAl hydrotalcite-derived catalysts

Jie Ren et al.

Summary: In this study, Mg-Al hydrotalcites with tailored morphologies were prepared and supported with Ni for corncob tar reforming. The Ni/MgAl-10 catalyst exhibited excellent activity in syngas production due to its high dispersion of Ni particles, large specific surface area, high reducibility, and high basicity. Compared to other catalysts, Ni/MgAl-10 showed higher stability in steam reforming of toluene, providing insights for designing novel Ni-based catalysts.

An integrated two-step process of reforming and adsorption using biochar for enhanced tar removal in syngas cleaning

Sweta Singh et al.

Summary: The two-step process of tar removal results in a significant decrease in tar content, with approximately 60% of tar being removed in the reforming step and about 40% remaining in the adsorption step. Raman spectroscopy indicates a growing predominance of higher aromatics in the catalyst and lower aromatics in the adsorbent. The BET results show a significant decrease in porosity of the biochar, suggesting coverage of pore surface by adsorbing species.

Toluene Steam Reforming over Ni/CeZrO2-The Influence of Steam to Carbon Ratio and Contact Time on the Catalyst Performance and Carbon Deposition

Agata Lamacz

Summary: The formation of tars during coal or biomass gasification leads to decreased efficiency and increased maintenance costs. Catalytic steam reforming using nickel supported on ceria-zirconia (Ni/CeZrO2) is a promising method for tar removal, with Ni providing the reforming activity and CeZrO2 protecting the catalyst from carbon deposition.

Hydrogen-rich syngas production from biomass pyrolysis and catalytic reforming using biochar-based catalysts

Yanjie Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the use of residual biochar-based catalyst in catalytic reforming process after biomass pyrolysis. The results show that biochar has abundant pore structure and catalytic activity, which is favorable for bio-oil reforming. The addition of Ni to biochar enables it to act as a support, reducing NiO to active Ni and protecting Ni from oxidation. It is found that 10wt% Ni/Char catalyst at 650 degrees C yields the optimal syngas production of 34.321 mmol per 1 g biomass. The addition of water significantly increases syngas production due to the thorough utilization of biological carbon.

Effect of steam on coke deposition during the tar reforming from corn straw pyrolysis over biochar

Hongliang Sun et al.

Summary: The combination of steam and biochar can effectively remove tar in a short period of time, but the addition of steam reduces the combustion reactivity of biochar, increases aromatization, and decreases O-containing structures. Furthermore, steam can reduce the aliphatics content in tar while increasing the O-containing aromatics content. Additionally, the introduction of steam leads to a decrease in CH4 yield and an increase in H-2 yield, with changes in the H/C and O/C atomic ratios of the gas composition.

Mechanism of coke formation and corresponding gas fraction characteristics in biochar-catalyzed tar reforming during Corn Straw Pyrolysis

Hongliang Sun et al.

Summary: The formation of coke deposition is a major obstacle in the development of tar reforming and biomass thermal conversion. Biochar produced at 800 degrees C was used for catalytic reforming of biomass pyrolysis tar at 650 degrees C, leading to increased coke yield and decreased tar removal efficiency with extended feeding time. Biochar is more efficient in removing aliphatic components from tar than aromatic components, and catalytic reforming of tar leads to increased aromatization. Additionally, the addition of biochar has minimal impact on CO and CO2 yield but affects CH4 and H2 yield.

Insights into the mechanism of tar reforming using biochar as a catalyst

Yurong Liu et al.

Summary: Biochar is an efficient catalyst for tar removal during biomass gasification. The research focused on investigating the mechanism of tar reforming with biochar as a catalyst, showing that activated biochar can enhance the destruction of light tar compounds and improve H2/CO ratio during tar reforming. The catalytic activity of biochar for tar reforming mainly relies on the content of O-containing functional groups, which facilitate the dissociation of tar molecules and enhance the tar removal efficiency.
