Assessment of the Engine Vibration and Noise Characteristics of an Unmodified Direct Injection Engine Powered With Non-Feedstock Citrullus lanatus Seed Oil

A. Senthil Kumar et al.

Summary: The trend of using alternative fuels to tackle fossil fuel depletion has been on the rise. Overuse of fossil fuels due to rapid population growth and industrialization has led to a shortage of fossil fuels. As a result, many alternative fuels have been discovered and used as effective replacements in terms of combustion and emission performance characteristics. In this research, the importance and characteristics of noise and vibration of test fuels derived from watermelon seeds were discussed. Experimental tests were conducted on a diesel engine, and the results showed that higher proportions of biodiesel led to lower noise and vibration levels.

Comprehensive analysis of combustion phasing of multi-injection HCCI diesel engine at different speeds and loads

W. Niklawy et al.

Summary: Heat release analysis is crucial in homogeneous charge compression ignition engines for controlling combustion phasing and developing combustion models. Experimental work on a turbocharged common rail diesel engine is conducted to measure in-cylinder pressure and compute Apparent Heat Release Rate. The analysis includes low- and high-temperature reaction events, in-cylinder temperature, and cumulative fuel burning rate. A new correlation considering engine speed and load is proposed, showing excellent agreement between predicted and measured results.

Effect of novel fuel vaporiser technology on engine characteristics of partially premixed charge compression ignition (PCCI) engine with toroidal combustion chamber

Swapnil Bhurat et al.

Summary: Partially pre-mixed charge compression ignition (PCCI) and combustion chamber geometry play significant roles in improving the potential of compression ignition engines and their impact on the environment. Experimentation with a novel fuel vaporizer technology in a single-cylinder DI diesel engine showed improvements in engine characteristics when using PCCI mode with a toroidal combustion chamber (TCC) piston. Results demonstrated that PCCI mode effectively reduced NOx emissions and improved engine efficiency, but also showed limitations such as increased pressure rise rate at full engine load. The study suggests that the limitations of PCCI can be mitigated by utilizing TCC piston geometry, but the usage of PCCI is constrained by specific vapor flow rates and engine load ranges.

Summary: Homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) engine shows potential as an alternative to traditional internal combustion engines due to its high thermal efficiency and low emissions. This study compared the accuracy of different heat transfer models and found that Assanis and Hohenberg models performed the best in estimating heat transfer in an HCCI engine. The engine operating parameters, such as intake pressure, equivalence ratio, and engine speed, were found to have significant impacts on heat flux.
