Effects of variations in fuel properties on a homogeneous charge compression ignited light-duty diesel engine operated with gasoline-isobutanol blends

Aneesh Vijay Kale et al.

Summary: In this study, experiments were conducted on a modified diesel engine operating in port fuel injected HCCI mode with gasoline-isobutanol blends. It was found that increasing the concentration of isobutanol in the fuel blends improved the engine's load range, performance, and reduced emissions. Additionally, the addition of a cetane improver, 2-EHN, enabled stable HCCI combustion at lower engine loads.

Investigations on load range extension of a homogeneous charge compression ignited light-duty diesel engine operated with diisopropyl ether and gasoline blends

Aneesh Vijay Kale et al.

Summary: This study aims to extend the operating load range of a diesel engine in HCCI mode by using high volatile, optimum reactivity fuel. The results show that increasing the content of diisopropyl ether in fuel blends can improve the indicated thermal efficiency, but also increase the emissions of unburned hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide.

Oxidation behaviors and nanostructure of particulate matter produced from a diesel engine fueled with n-pentanol and 2-ethylhexyl nitrate additives

Xiaochen Wang et al.

Summary: The experiments conducted on a high pressure common-rail diesel engine using different fuel blends showed that increasing n-pentanol concentration in diesel/n-pentanol mixtures led to higher soot oxidation reactivity. The addition of EHN to DP30 fuel resulted in varying levels of soot oxidation reactivity changes. There was a nonlinear correlation between soot reactivity and nanostructure, indicating that other factors like active surface area and surface functional group could also influence soot oxidation reactivity.

Effect of ethanol-gasoline blends on SI engine performance and emissions

Mortadha K. Mohammed et al.

Summary: The negative effects of traditional engine fuels on climate change have led to a high level of competition in finding alternative fuels that are more environmentally friendly. Alcohol fuels, particularly ethanol, have been found to be practical for blending with traditional engine fuels like gasoline. Research has shown that blending ethanol with gasoline can increase power, efficiency, and reduce harmful exhaust gases. However, ethanol may have a negative impact on volumetric efficiency, while also improving power and efficiency as its concentration increases.
