Thermal decomposition and interaction mechanism of HFC-227ea/n-hexane as a zeotropic working fluid for organic Rankine cycle

Erguang Huo et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the thermal decomposition and interaction mechanism of HFC-227ea/n-hexane zeotropic working fluid. The results show that the hydrogen bond formed between HFC-227ea and n-hexane improves the thermal stability of n-hexane but weakens the thermal stability of HFC-227ea.

The impact of H2O on the combustion of n-pentane: A reactive molecular dynamic simulation study

Erguang Huo et al.

Summary: Reactive molecular dynamic simulations were used to investigate the impact of H2O on the combustion of n-pentane. The presence of H2O significantly affected the consumption rate of n-pentane during combustion, promoting combustion at lower temperatures but inhibiting it at higher temperatures. The study identified four stages in the combustion process of n-pentane, with the early stages involving pyrolysis reactions and later stages involving combustion reactions with O-2 and H2O molecules. The findings have important implications for the safety of n-pentane in the field of organic Rankine cycle.

Reductive liquefaction of lignin to monocyclic hydrocarbons: ReS2/Al2O3 as efficient char inhibitor and hydrodeoxygenation catalyst

Pouya Sirous-Rezaei et al.

Summary: The ReS2/Al2O3 catalyst showed high char-suppressing potential and high hydrodeoxygenation efficiency in the reductive liquefaction of kraft lignin, significantly outperforming the conventional sulfide catalyst NiMo/Al2O3. The catalytic performance of ReS2/Al2O3 is attributed to its high oxophilicity, metal-like behavior of rhenium sulfide, and sufficient acidity, playing a crucial role in determining the reaction pathway towards either solid char residues or liquid monomeric products in alkali-assisted depolymerization of lignin.

A molecular investigation on lignin thermochemical conversion and carbonaceous organics deposition induced catalyst deactivation

Cheng Chen et al.

Summary: Surface coking is a major deactivation pattern for metal-based catalysts in biofuel reforming, hindering the commercial use of biomass. Molecular dynamics simulation is used to study the thermal degradation of Ni nanocatalyst induced by surface instability, as well as the catalyst deactivation induced by coke deposition. The study reveals mechanisms behind the effects of temperature, PAH size, and oxygen content on coke adsorption, providing guidance for the design of anti-coking catalysts and catalyst regeneration evaluation.

Combustion mechanism of n-pentane, isopentane and neopentane as environmentally friendly working fluids: ReaxFF molecular dynamic simulations study

Erguang Huo et al.

Summary: ReaxFF reactive molecular dynamic simulations were used to study the combustion characteristics of n-pentane, isopentane, and neopentane. It was found that the oxygen content significantly affects the combustion of n-pentane, with neopentane burning most intensely, followed by isopentane and then n-pentane.

Revealing of Supercritical Water Gasification Process of Lignin by Reactive Force Field Molecular Dynamics Simulations

Veerapandian Ponnuchamy et al.

Summary: Gasification of lignin using supercritical water was studied through reactive force field molecular dynamics simulations. Results showed reaction and decomposition of lignin model starting at 2000 K, with the formation of guaiacol and 1,3-benzodioxole. Above 2500 K, H-2, CO, and CO2 were predominantly formed with water molecules contributing hydrogen and oxygen.

Synergistic effect of supercritical water and nano-catalyst on lignin gasification

Tao Wang et al.

Summary: Understanding the microscopic mechanism of supercritical water catalytic gasification is crucial for the efficient utilization of biomass energy. Pt and Ni nano-particles were used as catalysts to accelerate the SCWG of lignin dimer, with PtNPs showing more excellent properties in synergy with SCWG compared to NiNPs. The simulation results revealed that PtNPs and NiNPs reduce the gasification temperature and accelerate the degradation of lignin into monomers by adsorbing CO, CO2, and CH4.
