Uncertainties of cell number estimation in cyanobacterial colonies and the potential use of sphere packing

Eniko T-Krasznai et al.

Summary: This study investigated the accuracy of traditional methods for estimating the biovolume and cell count of cyanobacteria colonies. The results showed that these methods gave biased estimates due to the shape of the colonies. A novel approach using the random close sphere packing method was proposed, which provided good results in accurately estimating cell counts.

Life in suspension and its impact on phytoplankton morphology: an homage to Colin S. Reynolds

Luigi Naselli-Flores et al.

Summary: The morphological diversity of phytoplankton is an evolutionarily-driven strategy to cope with the variability and unpredictability of the turbulent pelagic environment. Turbulence is a key driver of phytoplankton dynamics, shaping the shape and size structure of phytoplankton assemblages. The evolutionary response of phytoplankton to turbulence governs their access to resources and survival in dynamic aquatic environments.

Phytoplankton in extreme environments: importance and consequences of habitat permanency

Judit Padisak et al.

Summary: The article explores the characteristics of species living in extreme environments and their impact on phytoplankton communities. In extreme environments, specific species adapted to the conditions are selected, leading to a dominance of one species in the phytoplankton community, while under less extreme conditions, a relatively stable equilibrium can be maintained.

Shape matters: the relationship between cell geometry and diversity in phytoplankton

Alexey Ryabov et al.

Summary: Size and shape have a profound impact on the ecophysiological performance and evolutionary fitness of organisms, with a strong relationship to taxonomic richness, especially in microbes. Research shows that cells of intermediate volume exhibit the greatest shape variation and are closely linked to taxonomic diversity.

Biovolume and surface area calculations for microalgae, using realistic 3D models

Gabor Borics et al.

Summary: This study introduces a novel approach using real-like 3D mesh objects to visualize microalgae and calculate their volume and surface area. By calculating specific shape and surface area constants, accurate volume and surface area can be quickly computed for each taxon, providing new possibilities for data analyses in the field of phytoplankton ecology.
