Five decades of ground flora changes in a temperate forest: The good, the bad and the ambiguous in biodiversity terms

K. J. Kirby et al.

Summary: The ground flora of a temperate woodland in southern England has undergone significant changes over the past fifty years, driven mainly by factors such as the decline of dominant tree species and other influences such as thinning and deer pressure. While no obvious impacts of climate change, eutrophication or invasive species were detected, there are signs suggesting these factors are starting to affect the flora. Legacy effects were observed in older woodlands with greater richness of specialist species. Management can mitigate some impacts, but others are largely beyond control at the site level.

Intra- and inter-specific leaf trait responses of understorey species to changes in forest maturity

Stefano Chelli et al.

Summary: The maturity of coppice stands has different effects on understorey vegetation, with specialists being more responsive to changes in forest stand age. Intraspecific variability plays a larger role in light capture traits, while interspecific differences are more important for resource conservation traits. Generalists contribute to community-level trait variation but are less responsive to changes in forest stand age.

Historical ecology and ancient forests: Progress, conservation issues and scientific prospects, with some examples from the French case

Laurent Berges et al.

Summary: Forest area in European countries has significantly increased since the 19th century, with at least half of today's forests growing on previously cultivated lands. However, this net forest expansion masks a slow erosion of ancient forests. Meanwhile, forest resource harvesting has shifted towards increased growing stocks in the past two centuries.

Forest floor plant diversity drives the use of mature spruce forests by European bison

Summary: The study found that European bison prefer to inhabit spruce forests with higher plant species richness and forest floor vegetation cover, enabling them to access a more diverse and abundant food sources.

Irregular silviculture positively influences multiple bat species in a lowland temperate broadleaf woodland

D. C. Alder et al.

Summary: Economic changes in the 20th century resulted in losses and fragmentation of semi-natural woodland in Britain, leading to reduced active woodland management and neglect of many areas. This lack of management has had negative impacts on some taxonomic groups such as birds, but the effect on bats is not well understood. A study in southern England found that irregular high forest had the highest bat species richness, with significant differences in occupancy rates for most bat species across different types of woodland management. Bat species were found to prefer open canopy, lower growing stocks, and reduced understorey density within the stands.

Large standard trees and deadwood promote functional divergence in the understory of beech coppice forests

Stefano Chelli et al.

Summary: The study conducted in 68 abandoned coppice-with-standards beech forest stands in central Italy found that the size of standard trees and lying deadwood were the main structural drivers of trait-based understory assemblages. Allowing the release of larger standards and the accumulation of deadwood could enhance the understory functional diversity of montane beech forests.
