Strengthening protection of endemic wildlife threatened by the international pet trade: The case of the Australian shingleback lizard

S. Heinrich et al.

Summary: Unsustainable wildlife trade poses a threat to Australian species like the shingleback lizard, which are illegally smuggled out and traded internationally without proper regulation. Contradictory legal frameworks between countries have led to loopholes in the international trade of protected species, highlighting the need for individual countries to modify legislation to cover and protect species that are nationally protected in their native range. Listing T. rugosa in Appendix III of CITES could provide a legal means for other countries to confiscate illegally exported shinglebacks from Australia, a strategy that could also be applied to other nationally protected species in international trade consideration.

Using Google Trends to Determine Current, Past, and Future Trends in the Reptile Pet Trade

Jose W. Valdez

Summary: Reptiles are popular exotic pets with the most common species being captive-bred and domestically obtained. This study used Google Trends to analyze the popularity of pet reptiles, finding that bearded dragons were the most popular followed by ball pythons and leopard geckos. The study also revealed that popular reptiles are typically docile, medium-sized, and easy to care for, while declining species are often wild-caught or restricted.

An overview of risk investment in the transnational illegal wildlife trade from stakeholder perspectives

Amber O. Brown et al.

Summary: The illegal wildlife trade poses serious threats, but the lack of identifiable relationships, risk functions, and reward systems hinders the effectiveness of domestic and international regulations. Further research and interventions targeting the relationships and motivations of stakeholders are needed for more successful interventions.
