High pressure processing inactivates human cytomegalovirus and hepatitis A virus while preserving macronutrients and native lactoferrin in human milk

Michael A. Pitino et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that HPP is effective in inactivating representative enveloped and nonenveloped viruses in human milk, reducing bacterial load, with no adverse effect on macronutrient and energy composition. Therefore, HPP shows great promise in replacing HoP in human milk banking facilities.

Impact of holder, high temperature short time and high hydrostatic pressure pasteurization methods on protein structure and aggregation in a human milk protein concentrate

Melanie Sergius-Ronot et al.

Summary: This study found that heat treatments had a greater impact on human milk protein concentrate than high hydrostatic pressure treatments, with heat treatment mainly causing aggregation of lactoferrin and alpha-lactalbumin. High hydrostatic pressure treatment had minimal impact on protein structure, indicating its potential as a pasteurization method for HMPC.

The ultrafiltration molecular weight cut-off has a limited effect on the concentration and protein profile during preparation of human milk protein concentrates

Melanie Sergius-Ronot et al.

Summary: This study aimed to optimize protein intake for low birth weight infants and proposed the use of a 50 kDa UF membrane for the preparation of human milk protein concentrate (HMPC). However, the results showed that the protein content of HMPC generated by both membranes was similar. The 50 kDa membrane had a higher permeate flux during the diafiltration sequence, but it was still insufficient to increase the protein purity of HMPC.

Heat-induced denaturation and bioactivity changes of whey proteins

Lina Zhang et al.

Summary: Whey proteins, as the second most abundant protein in milk, contain many bioactive proteins that play important roles in consumer health. Heating treatments during dairy processing can lead to changes in the structure and bioactivity of whey proteins, which may impact the nutritional value and properties of dairy products.

A Human Milk-Based Protein Concentrate Developed for Preterm Infants Retains Bioactive Proteins and Supports Growth of Weanling Rats

Sara Shama et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that using human milk-based protein concentrate supported normal growth in weanling rats. Rats fed the concentrate had higher cecum weights compared to the control group.
