Advances in preparation, interaction and stimulus responsiveness of protein-based nanodelivery systems

Qianzhu Lin et al.

Summary: The improved understanding of the connection between diet and health has led to growing interest in the development of functional foods designed to improve health and wellbeing. Nano-based delivery systems, particularly protein-based nanocarriers, are being developed to incorporate potentially health-promoting bioactive ingredients into these products. This review focuses on the preparation, properties, and applications of protein-based nanocarriers, including their use in targeted delivery and stimulus-responsive release of bioactive ingredients in the food industry.

Sodium chloride-programmed phase transition of β-conglycinin/lysozyme electrostatic complexes from amorphous precipitates to complex coacervates

Jiabao Zheng et al.

Summary: Sodium chloride was found to regulate the phase transition of beta-CG/LYS complexes, affecting the zeta-potential of the biomacromolecules and leading to a significant exothermic enthalpy change as the main driving force behind complex formation. The study also demonstrated dynamic protein exchange in coacervate droplets, similar to that in polyelectrolyte-based complex coacervates.

Dynamic equilibrium of ll-conglycinin/lysozyme heteroprotein complex coacervates

Jiabao Zheng et al.

Summary: Complex coacervate, a classic charged polymer material, is often studied without considering the crucial factor of time. This study examined the dynamic equilibrium/relaxation behavior of ll-CG/LYS heteroprotein coacervates, using turbidity kinetics and bright-field microscopy, and found that NaCl concentration, total protein concentration, and pH all play a role in affecting this equilibrium behavior.

Konjac glucomannan decreases metabolite release of a plant-based fishball analogue during in vitro digestion by affecting amino acid and carbohydrate metabolic pathways

Xinli Ran et al.

Summary: This study assessed the effect of konjac glucomannan (KGM) on the digestion of a plant-based fishball (PFB). The results showed that KGM prolonged digestion time and reduced the release of metabolites, which may help control appetite and lower postprandial blood glucose levels.

Self-assembled soy protein nanoparticles by partial enzymatic hydrolysis for pH-Driven Encapsulation and Delivery of Hydrophobic Cargo Curcumin

Dan Yuan et al.

Summary: Controlled partial enzymatic hydrolysis can effectively lead to the formation of multifunctional soy protein nanoparticles, which can serve as nanocarriers for active cargo delivery. The encapsulated curcumin in SPNPs showed enhanced solubility, stability, bioaccessibility, and antioxidant effects, providing potential for applications in targeted drug delivery and cellular antioxidant activity.

Trimeric Cationic Surfactant Coacervation as a Versatile Approach for Removing Organic Pollutants

Bin Liu et al.

Summary: The coacervation of cationic trimeric imine-based surfactants (TISn) with hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM) provides a versatile and efficient method to rapidly remove a broad spectrum of dye pollutants from wastewater. The phase separation of dye effluents treated by trimeric surfactants and HPAM occurs within 30 seconds under turbulent conditions, achieving a dye removal efficiency of up to 99.9% for anionic and neutral dyes in dosages of up to 120 mg/L. This approach offers a simple, effective, and sustainable solution for the rapid removal of dyes and other organic pollutants.

Heteroprotein Complex Coacervate Based on β-Conglycinin and Lysozyme: Dynamic Protein Exchange, Thermodynamic Mechanism, and Lysozyme Activity

Jiabao Zheng et al.

Summary: Research has shown that within a certain pH range, beta-conglycinin and lysozyme can form coacervates instead of precipitates, allowing for dynamic exchange of proteins with the dilute phase while retaining activity. This suggests that beta-conglycinin-based heteroprotein complex coacervate is an effective method for enriching and preserving protein activity in a purely aqueous environment.

Peptide-based coacervates as biomimetic protocells

Manzar Abbas et al.

Summary: Coacervates are condensed liquid-like droplets formed by liquid-liquid phase separation of molecules through weak associative interactions. Peptides, with diverse amino acid residues, can tailor their phase separation propensity and selectivity in guest molecule uptake, making them attractive as building blocks for biomimetic protocells. This review summarizes recent developments in peptide-based coacervates and outlines the potential for active droplets in moving away from thermodynamic equilibrium.
