Multiple free radical scavenging reactions of flavonoids

Yan-Zhen Zheng et al.

Summary: The study reveals the diverse free radical scavenging reactions of flavonoids in different phases. In the gas and benzene phases, free radicals are mainly trapped through di-hydrogen atom transfer reactions. In the water phase, polyanions are formed through consecutive proton loss reactions, ultimately scavenging free radicals via electron transfer.

Bound Polyphenols from Red Quinoa Prevailed over Free Polyphenols in Reducing Postprandial Blood Glucose Rises by Inhibiting a-Glucosidase Activity and Starch Digestion

Yu Zhang et al.

Summary: Inhibitory effects of free and bound polyphenols extracted from red quinoa on alpha-glucosidase activity and postprandial glucose were investigated. Bound polyphenols exhibited stronger antioxidant activities and were more effective in inhibiting alpha-glucosidase activity compared to free polyphenols. Additionally, bound polyphenols delayed starch digestion and reduced postprandial glucose increases in mice.

Contrasting Community Assembly Mechanisms Underlie Similar Biogeographic Patterns of Surface Microbiota in the Tropical North Pacific Ocean

Jie Kong et al.

Summary: Bacteria and microeukaryotes play important roles in global biogeochemical cycles. In this study, the distribution patterns and assembly mechanisms of these microorganisms in the tropical North Pacific Ocean were investigated. The results showed significant biogeographic patterns and diversity differences between regions for both bacteria and microeukaryotes. The correlations between spatial and environmental variables and the alpha and beta diversities of these microorganisms were similar. Ecological drift was the main mechanism driving the bacterial communities, while heterogeneous selection, dispersal limitation, and ecological drift collectively explained the turnover of microeukaryote communities.

Summary: This study demonstrates a promising biological co-upgrading of ethanol-assisted depolymerized lignin into protocatechuic acid and polyhydroxyalkanoic acid without the need for separation processes. By engineering a Pseudomonas putida KT2440 strain, the efficiency of ethanol utilization pathway was enhanced, resulting in the production of value-added bioproducts. The utilization of formaldehyde promoted the growth and production of PCA and PHA from depolymerized lignin, with ethanol solvent also being used for co-upgrading.

In vitro antioxidant activity and enzyme inhibition properties of wheat whole grain, bran and flour defatted with hexane and supercritical fluid extraction

Ranabir Sahu et al.

Summary: In this study, two methods, hexane and supercritical carbon dioxide fluid extraction (SC-CO2), were used to extract phenolic acids from wheat whole grain, bran, and flour. SC-CO2 extraction yield higher oil content than hexane extraction, and the total phenolic content and individual phenolic acids content were significantly higher in SC-CO2 defatted wheat whole grain samples compared to hexane extraction. The wheat grain contained abundant ferulic acid and p-coumaric acid as phenolic acids, leading to elevated antioxidant and enzyme inhibitory activities in the defatted samples. Positive correlation was found between total phenolic content and antioxidant/enzyme inhibitory activities.
