Differences of gut microbiota composition in mice supplied with polysaccharides from γ-irradiated and non-irradiated Schizophyllum commune

Chaomin Yin et al.

Summary: Polysaccharides from Schizophyllum commune, both normal and gamma-irradiated, were shown to prevent weight gain, enhance kidney uric acid metabolism, and increase the concentration of SCFAs in mice. Additionally, these polysaccharides promoted the growth of beneficial gut microbiota and inhibited harmful bacteria. Gamma-irradiated polysaccharides demonstrated better effects in preventing weight gain and modulating the gut microbiota of mice, indicating their potential as a health supplement for obesity prevention.

Mesona chinensis Benth polysaccharides alleviates liver injury by beneficial regulation of gut microbiota in cyclophosphamide-induced mice

Yuzhen Hong et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that supplementing Mesona chinensis Benth polysaccharide (MP) can protect the liver from cyclophosphamide-induced damage and modulate the composition of the gut microbiota. MP supplementation inhibits liver inflammation, enhances antioxidant capacity, repairs liver damage, and alters the levels of short chain fatty acids and lipopolysaccharide in the gut.

Pectin from leaves of birch (Betula pendula Roth.): Results of NMR experiments and hypothesis of the RG-I structure

Victoria V. Golovchenko et al.

Summary: We report the discovery of separate polymers rhamnogalacturonan-I (RG-I) and galacturonan (HG) in birch leaf pectin, challenging the classical model. NMR spectroscopy and chromatography were used to separate and study RG-I and HG, revealing methyl-esterified D-galactosyluronic acid residues in HG and oligosaccharides in RG-I. HMBC and ROESY spectra confirmed the substitution of 2,4-rhamnose residues at O-4 by single D-galactose residues.

Dendrobium officinale leaf polysaccharides regulation of immune response and gut microbiota composition in cyclophosphamide-treated mice

Hualing Xie et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the bioactivity of polysaccharides extracted from Dendrobium officinale leaf (DOLP) in immune deficiency mice. DOLP improves immune status by restoring gut barrier and reducing immune organ atrophy. It also regulates cytokine levels by inhibiting pro-inflammatory cytokines and promoting anti-inflammatory cytokines. Furthermore, DOLP can modulate gut microbiota composition.

Mediation of the microbiome-gut axis by oyster (Crassostrea gigas) polysaccharides: A possible protective role in alcoholic liver injury

Suisui Jiang et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the molecular mechanism of oyster polysaccharides in preventing alcoholic liver injury and found that the steaming process had little influence on their bioactivity. The treatments with RPS and SPS protected gut functions by enhancing tight-junction proteins expression, suppressing inflammatory responses, and modulating microbiota composition and SCFAs levels. These results suggest that oyster polysaccharides alleviate alcoholic liver injury by mediating the gut-liver-metabolite axis.

Summary: The study revealed that okra raw polysaccharide extract (ORPE) has a dual function as both an immunosuppressant and an immunostimulant, suppressing regulatory T cells and macrophage activations while promoting the activation of CD8+ T cells and increasing interleukin-2 levels. This suggests potential applications of ORPE in the pharmaceutical and nutraceutical industries.
