Green synthesis of glycerol carbonate via transesterification of glycerol using mechanochemically prepared sodium aluminate catalysts

John Keogh et al.

Summary: The synthesis of glycerol carbonate via the transesterification of glycerol with dimethyl carbonate using supported sodium aluminate catalysts is an efficient method with high yield. Mechanically prepared catalysts were found to be more stable, with alumina support providing the highest stability. The catalyst with 20 wt % sodium aluminate supported on alumina showed the best performance in terms of efficiency and stability.

Critical Review on Production of Glycerol Carbonate from Byproduct Glycerol through Transesterification

Shalini Sahani et al.

Summary: Biodiesel production from nonedible and waste-cooking oils generates glycerol, which has various applications as a platform molecule for producing valuable derivatives like glycerol carbonate. The transesterification process using dimethyl carbonate is considered the most efficient method for glycerol carbonate production, with mild reaction conditions and less harmful reagents. This review evaluates recent studies on large scale production of glycerol carbonate using different catalysts, discussing relevant reaction parameters and suggesting areas for future research.

Layered double hydroxide uniformly coated on mesoporous silica with tunable morphorlogies for catalytic transesterification of glycerol with dimethyl carbonate

Qi Ming She et al.

Summary: This study presented ultrasonic and hydrothermal post-synthesis strategies in uniformly coating LDH on mesochannels of mesoporous silica, forming hierarchical nano-composite catalysts for efficient transesterification of glycerol with dimethyl carbonate. The rice-shaped LDH/SBA-15 nano-composite catalysts showed superior performance, with morphological control reducing internal diffusion path lengths and increasing availability of basic sites. This approach sheds light on fabricating novel nano-composite catalysts with other metal LDH within mesochannels of mesoporous silica for enhanced catalytic performance.

Lithium loaded coal fly ash as sustainable and effective catalyst for the synthesis of glycerol carbonate from glycerol

Shivali Arora et al.

Summary: In this study, coal fly ash was utilized as a catalytic support for lithium ions by impregnation, with the resulting catalyst's basic properties and catalytic activity towards glycerol conversion being experimentally determined. The maximum catalytic activity was achieved with 2 wt% lithium loaded CFA, calcined at 500 degrees C, leading to a maximum yield of glycerol carbonate. The proposed work has the potential to potentially boost the economy of the biodiesel industry.
