Summary: Frost effects on savanna plant communities are similar to those from fire, altering community structure and species composition. However, the impacts of frost on the ground-layer community are not well-studied. This study in the Cerrado region of Brazil examined the effects of frost on ground-layer plant species along a tree cover gradient. Frost caused immediate dieback of perennial ground-layer, particularly in areas with low tree cover. While frost did not reduce species richness, it increased litter cover and decreased bare soil, potentially hindering crucial processes for plant population recovery.

The diversity of post-fire regeneration strategies in the cerrado ground layer

Evaluating belowground bud banks of native species from Cerrado: Structural, chemical, and ecological approaches

Summary: Resprouting from belowground buds enables plants in the Brazilian Cerrado to survive after aboveground biomass loss. This study aimed to describe traits related to resprouting abilities of four native Cerrado species and found that they were able to resprout after pine removal due to the maintenance of belowground bud banks. The main storage and protective compounds found in the belowground bud-bearing organs included starch, phenolic compounds, and carotenoids.

The role of morpho-physiological traits in frost tolerance of neotropical savanna trees

Summary: The study found that frost-sensitive tree species tended to have unprotected buds, but were able to recover lost biomass after frost; while frost-resistant species had buds with higher protection levels and maintained higher photosynthetic capacity under sub-zero temperatures. Different strategies for persistence under frost events were observed between frost-sensitive and frost-resistant species, and frequent frost events could significantly impact the height and carbon gain of sensitive species.
