IL-17/IL-17 Receptor Pathway-Mediated Inflammatory Response in Apostichopus japonicus Supports the Conserved Functions of Cytokines in Invertebrates

Zhimeng Lv et al.

Summary: This study provides functional evidence that IL-17 is a conserved cytokine in invertebrates, specifically in the sea cucumber Apostichopus japonicus. The expression of A. japonicus IL-17 (AjIL-17) was positively correlated with the development of inflammation, and the administration of purified recombinant AjIL-17 protein directly promoted inflammation. A novel IL-17R counterpart was identified in the sea cucumber genome and shown to bind AjIL-17. AjIL-17/AjIL-17R regulated inflammatory responses by promoting TRAF6 ubiquitination, p65 nuclear translocation, and coelomocyte proliferation and migration.

The role of damage associated molecular pattern molecules (DAMPs) and permeability of the blood-brain barrier in depression and neuroinflammation

Maria Fernanda Serna-Rodriguez et al.

Summary: Depression is a mental disorder characterized by sadness and loss of interest. It is influenced by genetic background, early life abuse, life stressors, and inflammatory profiles. Inflammatory activation may trigger and maintain depression, with crosstalk between the peripheral immune system and the central nervous system playing a role.

Summary: The study identified the presence of Smad family in the most primitive vertebrates through investigation of lamprey transcriptome data, revealing their similarities in topology and homology with other vertebrates. Gene co-expression network analysis indicated that Smads may be associated with ployI:C.
