Fatigue life extension of additively manufactured Nickel-base 718 alloy by nanostructured surface

Ruslan M. Karimbaev et al.

Summary: The beneficial effect of ultrasonic nanocrystal surface modification (UNSM) treatment on the mechanical properties and fatigue performance of Nickel-base 718 alloy fabricated by laser directed energy deposition (LDED) process was investigated in this study. The treatment demonstrated a significant enhancement in fatigue performance by introducing high compressive residual stress (CRS) and generating a nanostructured surface layer. Additionally, it was found that surface roughness decreased and hardness increased after the treatment.

Anisotropic damage evolution and modeling for a nickel-based superalloy built by additive manufacturing

Summary: This study characterizes the damage evolution in Inconel 718 alloy built by selective laser melting (SLM) by analyzing the effects of microstructural features such as porosity and precipitates. The research introduces a microstructure-dependent damage model to quantitatively describe the contributions of microstructures to the macroscopic material degradation. The study reveals the importance of pore size, shape, and distribution in the anisotropic damage evolution of the alloy.

Constitutive model for thermomechanical fatigue conditions of an additively manufactured combustor alloy

Thomas Lindstrom et al.

Summary: This study investigates and models the mechanical response of an additively manufactured nickel-based combustor alloy subjected to thermomechanical fatigue (TMF) loadings. The study found that the orientation of the material affects its mechanical properties. A constitutive model is developed to accurately describe the material's response under TMF conditions.

Anisotropic cyclic plasticity modeling for additively manufactured nickel-based superalloys

Shengzhe Jin et al.

Summary: This paper establishes a constitutive model for a nickel-based superalloy manufactured by selective laser melting to characterize its cyclic mechanical behaviors under multiaxial loading conditions. It is found that the effects from the building orientation decrease with multiaxial cyclic loads. By introducing a cyclic constitutive model based on the Hill criterion and considering the orthotropic mechanical properties depending on loading cycles, the computation confirms that the model can reasonably simulate the cyclic elastic-plastic behavior under non-proportional complex loading conditions and provides an applicable method for engineering applications.

Summary: This study quantifies the effects of laser recasting superalloy through experimental and computational investigations, establishing fatigue life assessment and describing the mechanical properties of the recasting material. The results confirm that the mechanical strength of the recasting material reaches nearly 50% of the base material, while its fatigue life is only about 1/10 of the base material.

Microstructural characterization and fatigue performance of the recast material induced by laser manufacturing of a nickel-based superalloy

Tinglian Zhang et al.

Summary: The research systematically investigated the microstructures and mechanical properties of laser-induced recast material on nickel-based superalloy Inconel 718, finding that the yield strength and microhardness in the recast zone are lower than that of the base material due to epitaxial growth of columnar grains and a decrease in strengthening phases gamma' and gamma''. On the other hand, the recast-affected zone shows higher yield strength attributed to the growth of strengthening twins, partial dissolution of the delta phase, and cold work hardening.

Summary: Additive manufacturing shows promise for producing components for internal combustion engines, but issues such as poor surface quality, internal defects, and anisotropic mechanical behavior can impact fatigue strength. The study investigates the influence of building direction on component performance and crack propagation mechanisms.
