Rapid evaluation of notch stress intensity factors using the peak stress method with 3D tetrahedral finite element models: Comparison of commercial codes

Giovanni Meneghetti et al.

Summary: This paper presents a Round Robin study among eleven Italian Universities to calibrate the peak stress method (PSM) using seven different commercial FE software packages. The study found that most of the FE software packages had similar PSM parameter values, with the main source of discrepancy being the stress extrapolation method at FE nodes.

Summary: This work provides useful expressions for applying the strain energy density method to components with sharp V-notches under mixed loading conditions. The study evaluates the average strain energy density value in the control volume and assesses the theoretical difference caused by approximating the control volume shape.

Multiaxial variable amplitude fatigue strength assessment of steel welded joints using the peak stress method

Alberto Campagnolo et al.

Summary: This paper presents a rapid method, the peak stress method (PSM), for evaluating notch stress intensity factors. The PSM has been extended to consider variable amplitude (VA) uniaxial and multiaxial loadings by combining it with the Miner's Linear Damage Rule, and has been successfully validated against a large amount of fatigue data from literature.

Automated implementation of the Peak Stress Method for the fatigue assessment of complex welded structures

A. Visentin et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a fatigue strength assessment method based on the Peak Stress Method (PSM) and its application in complex welded structures. By using 10-node tetra elements and Ansys Mechanical software, automated analysis of aluminum and steel 3D welded structures subjected to multiaxial fatigue loads is achieved. The method allows for fatigue strength assessment of complex welded details in large-scale structures and compensates for the limited number of fatigue classes and details available in international standards.
