Solid Foam Ru/C Catalysts for Sugar Hydrogenation to Sugar Alcohols-Preparation, Characterization, Activity, and Selectivity

German Araujo-Barahona et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the development and application of a solid foam catalyst based on ruthenium nanoparticles supported on active carbon. Kinetic experiments were conducted to investigate the hydrogenation performance of the catalyst on two sugars at different temperatures and hydrogen pressures. The results showed high selectivities and conversions of the sugars to sugar alcohols, and the ratio of the sugar mixture also affected the reaction rate and catalyst behavior.

Ni-Fe alloying enhances the efficiency of the maltose hydrogenation process: The role of surface species and kinetic study

Achraf Sadier et al.

Summary: This study investigates the performance differences between Ni-Fe/SiO2 and Ni/SiO2 catalysts in the aqueous phase hydrogenation of maltose through kinetic studies. Under the experimental conditions, Ni-Fe/SiO2 exhibits higher activity, selectivity, and stability compared to Ni/SiO2, indicating a stronger interaction with maltose and significant coverage differences on the bimetallic surface.

Probing the core and surface composition of nanoalloy to rationalize its selectivity: Study of Ni-Fe/SiO2 catalysts for liquid-phase hydrogenation

Dichao Shi et al.

Summary: The rationalization of the catalytic performance of bimetallic Ni-Fe catalysts in selective hydrogenation reactions is dependent on the distribution of Ni and Fe within the nanoparticles and at the surface. Through various characterization techniques, it was found that reduced Ni-Fe nanoparticles exhibit a gradient of Ni concentrations from a Ni-enriched core to a Ni-depleted, Fe-enriched outer shell. The highest yield of furfuryl alcohol was obtained with a surface proportion of 35-45% Ni atom. These results highlight the importance of limited Ni surface domains among Fe atoms in restricting the hydroconversion process.

Strong Metal-Support Interactions between Nickel and Iron Oxide during CO2 Hydrogenation

Xiaohan Yuan et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigates a series of nickel-iron-based bimetallic catalysts to unveil the nature of active sites for the CO2 hydrogenation reaction, revealing an environmental-sensitive strong metal-support interaction between Ni nanoparticles and iron oxides. Iron oxides migrate and entirely cover the metallic Ni nanoparticles during the reaction, yielding a more active core-shell-type structure with much-improved reducibility, a process indirectly monitored in a time-resolved manner by in situ DRIFTS and confirmed to complete within 30 min of the reaction.

Correlation between surface chemistry and magnetism in iron nanoparticles

Lorraine Haim et al.

Summary: Iron nanoparticles were produced by hydrogenation of different iron amido complexes, resulting in nanostructured materials with bcc structure or nanoparticles with average sizes below 3nm and a polytetrahedral structure. Experimental results were compared with DFT calculations, revealing that amido ligands play a key role in stabilizing nanoparticles in solution, while hydride surface coverage governs their surface magnetic properties. Magnetic measurements provide valuable indicators of the surface properties and potential reactivity of iron nanoparticles in this size range.
