Does vertebral body tethering cause disc and facet joint degeneration? A preliminary MRI study with minimum two years follow-up

Altug Yucekul et al.

Summary: The study followed adolescent idiopathic scoliosis patients who underwent thoracoscopic VBT for at least 2 years and found that intermediate discs and facet joints were preserved after surgery with no significant differences or further deterioration noted. In one patient, previously degenerated discs worsened, while in another patient, healthy adjacent facet joints degenerated. Further studies with larger cohorts and longer follow-up periods are needed for a more comprehensive analysis of the effects of VBT surgery.

Prospective Follow-up Report on Anterior Vertebral Body Tethering for Idiopathic Scoliosis Interim Results from an FDA IDE Study

Amer F. Samdani et al.

Summary: Anterior vertebral body tethering (aVBT) has shown promising results as a novel treatment option for immature patients with idiopathic scoliosis. The FDA-approved IDE study demonstrated the safety and efficacy of aVBT, with potential for improvement in reoperation rates.

Anterior Vertebral Body Tethering for Treatment of Idiopathic Scoliosis in the Skeletally Immature Results of 112 Cases

Paul R. P. Rushton et al.

Summary: The prospective case series aimed to determine the efficacy of anterior vertebral body tethering (AVBT) in skeletally immature patients with idiopathic scoliosis. The results showed satisfactory deformity correction in the majority of cases, but also highlighted the need for improved implants and patient selection due to relatively high complication and revision rates. Long-term follow-up is crucial to establish the true efficacy of this procedure.

Comparison of clinical and functional outcomes of vertebral body tethering to posterior spinal fusion in patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis and evaluation of quality of life: preliminary results

Tuna Pehlivanoglu et al.

Summary: This study compares the clinical and functional outcomes of vertebral body tethering (VBT) and posterior spinal fusion (PSF) for the first time. It shows that VBT has significant advantages in terms of lumbar range of motion and life quality scores.
