Testing Seefeldt's Proficiency Barrier: A Longitudinal Study

Fernando Garbeloto dos Santos et al.

Summary: The idea that proficiency in fundamental movement skills is necessary for the development of complex motor skills is widely accepted. However, there is limited research on whether children below a specified proficiency barrier would have difficulty in improving performance in complex skills. This study showed that only children with sufficient proficiency in certain skills before intervention were able to perform well in a transitional motor skill.

Motor competence in fundamental motor skills and sport skill learning: Testing the proficiency barrier hypothesis

Cicero L. A. Costa et al.

Summary: The study found that motor competence in fundamental motor skills affects the learning of sports motor skills. Children with high motor competence in fundamental motor skills showed better improvement in learning the volleyball serve, suggesting that initial competence in fundamental motor skills may act as a barrier to learning complex sports motor skills.
