Using arylsulfonyl chlorides as sulfur sources, various thioesters were obtained with good yields and functional group compatibility. In this reaction, Mo(CO)(6) acts both as a convenient CO surrogate and a suitable reductant.

Palladium-Catalyzed Carbonylation of Disulfides and Ethylene: Synthesis of β-Thiopropionate Thioesters

Summary: The transformation of carbon monoxide and ethylene into high value-added chemicals, particularly multifunctionalized compounds, is economically significant. A palladium-catalyzed thiocarbonylative 1,2-difunctionalization of ethylene was developed, resulting in successful conversion of organic disulfides into beta-thiopropionate thioesters with good yields.

Nickel-Catalyzed Carbonylative Synthesis of α,β-Unsaturated Thioesters from Vinyl Triflates and Arylsulfonyl Chlorides

Summary: This study developed a new method for synthesizing alpha,beta-unsaturated thioesters via nickel-catalyzed thiocarbonylation reaction of vinyl triflates with arylsulfonyl chlorides. By using Mo(CO)(6) as both CO source and reductant, alpha,beta-unsaturated thioesters were obtained in moderate to good yields with excellent functional group compatibility. It is notable that this is the first example of nickel-catalyzed carbonylative synthesis of alpha,beta-unsaturated thioesters using arylsulfonyl chlorides as the coupling partner.

Palladium-Catalyzed Regiodivergent Decarboxylative Hydrothiocarbonylation of Vinylarenes Using Oxalic Acid Monothioesters

Summary: In this study, oxalic acid monothioester (OAM) was reported as a synthetic equivalent of thioester for palladium-catalyzed decarboxylative hydrothiocarbonylation of vinylarenes, achieving both branched and linear regioselectivity. These reactions provided user-friendly synthetic methods for the preparation of α- or β-arylated propionic acid thioesters from vinylarenes without directly handling toxic carbon monoxide and odorous thiols.

Photocatalytic Activation of Elemental Sulfur Enables a Chemoselective Three-Component Thioesterification

Summary: A mild and chemoselective three-component thioesterification method has been developed by using olefins, alpha-ketoacids, and elemental sulfur, with the photocatalytic activation of elemental sulfur playing a key role. This novel reaction allows for the rapid installation of a sulfur atom into molecules without the use of reactive and malodorous sulfur-containing compounds, resulting in high yields and a broad substrate scope. Mechanistic studies showed that the success of this transformation depends on the various roles played by elemental sulfur, including sulfurizing agent, terminal oxidant, and HAT mediator.
