Accelerating Benders decomposition for short-term hydropower maintenance scheduling

Jesus A. Rodriguez et al.

Summary: The maintenance scheduling problem for hydroelectric generators involves uncertainty in water flows and nonlinearity in hydroelectric production, solved using a two-stage stochastic program and parallelized Benders decomposition algorithm. By approximating hydroelectric production with linear inequalities and indicator variables, tailoring and testing various acceleration techniques successfully sped up the algorithm fourfold. Industrial results confirm high scalability of the parallelized Benders implementation in various scenarios.

A transmission expansion model for dynamic operation of flexible demand

Markus Loschenbrand

Summary: This paper presents a model that incorporates investments in demand flexibility into traditional transmission expansion problems through a dynamic power flow model and value function approximation using neural networks. It also introduces the use of robust sets and linearization to handle uncertainty and reduce computational complexity, as well as the transformation of a tri-level problem into a bi-level problem using Karush Kuhn Tucker conditions. Case studies on systems of varying complexity demonstrate the convergence of the algorithm and the cost-effective substitution of flexible resources for transmission lines in grid expansion.

Adjustable Uncertainty Set Constrained Unit Commitment With Operation Risk Reduced Through Demand Response

Yuefang Du et al.

Summary: The proposed approach introduces an adjustable uncertainty set to address uncertainties in renewable energy unit commitment, optimizing demand response to reduce operation risks of load shedding and RE curtailment. Without predefined parameters, it effectively transforms the original mixed-integer nonlinear problem into a mixed-integer linear problem for verification on IEEE systems. By comparing with existing methods, the effectiveness of the proposed approach in reducing conservativeness and operation risks is confirmed.

Summary: The authors explore a model for centralized scheduling of flexibility assets to reduce the cost of managing grid congestion, voltages, and losses. The study highlights the importance of defining the dynamic capabilities of flexibility resources in addressing uncertainty and time structures in scheduling. The findings stress the significance of using a stochastic model with rigorous consideration of time and uncertainty for optimal scheduling of flexibility resources.
