Carrera unified formulation (CUF) for the micropolar plates and shells. II. Complete linear expansion case

E. Carrera et al.

Summary: In this study, new higher-order models of orthotropic micropolar plates and shells were developed using the Carrera Unified Formulation (CUF). A complete linear expansion case (CLEC) was considered in detail. The stress and strain tensors, as well as the vectors of displacements and rotation, were presented as linear expansion in terms of the shell thickness coordinates. The equations of the micropolar theory of elasticity were transformed to the corresponding equations for the coefficients of the expansion, and a system of differential equations and natural boundary conditions were obtained. These developed equations can be used for calculating stress-strain and modeling thin-walled structures, considering micropolar couple stress and rotation effects.

A micropolar approach to microbuckling problems in unidirectionally reinforced polymer composites

B. Daum et al.

Summary: The paper applies micropolar continuum theory to predict the microbuckling strength of long fiber reinforced composites and extend simulations into the collapse regime. Compared to fine scale micromechanical representation, this approach offers superior numerical efficiency. Micropolar homogenization introduces additional rotational degrees of freedom to address the issue of fiber curvature not being considered.

Micropolar effects on the effective elastic properties and elastic fracture toughness of planar lattices

Kamel Berkache et al.

Summary: The effective elastic properties and mode I elastic fracture toughness of three isotropic planar lattices - hexagonal, kagome, and triangular - are studied from a micropolar continuum perspective. The results show that different lattices exhibit different dominant properties under macroscopic loading, and their micropolar internal length parameters and elastic properties have a close scaling relationship with relative density. Compared to the triangular and kagome lattices of identical relative density, the hexagonal lattice exhibits an order of magnitude higher couple stress intensity factor, indicating the importance of micropolar effects in bending dominated architectures.

On wave dispersion characteristics of magnetostrictive sandwich nanoplates in thermal environments

Farzad Ebrahimi et al.

Summary: The manuscript investigates the wave propagation characteristics of smart magnetostrictive sandwich nanoplates in the context of nonlocal strain gradient theory, utilizing Kirchhoff-Love theorem and dynamic form of virtual work principle to model a thin-type system. Analytical dispersion solution is used to solve the dynamic problem and extract wave response, while comparing results with reported natural frequencies to examine accuracy. The study shows magnetostriction can impact dispersion responses of smart nanoplates at low wave numbers.

Graded multifunctional piezoelectric metastructures for wideband vibration attenuation and energy harvesting

M. Alshaqaq et al.

Summary: This study investigates a graded LR piezoelectric metamaterial-based structure with spatially varying resonator parameters, demonstrating wideband wave attenuation and mode trapping characteristics. The effect of different grading patterns on vibration attenuation bandwidth, localization of vibration modes, and harvested power is explored, revealing varied outcomes for each pattern. The results suggest that graded resonator configurations offer wider bandwidth in energy harvesting compared to uniform resonators, supporting the design of multifunctional piezoelectric metastructures for vibration attenuation and energy harvesting concurrently.

Size effects on the band gap of flexural wave propagation in one-dimensional periodic micro-beams

Pengcheng Zhao et al.

Summary: The size effect significantly influences the mechanical properties of micro-scale materials, leading to higher frequency movement in the band structure, with the material distribution and geometric period also affecting the band gap. The findings suggest that the size effect on the band structure of microstructures cannot be overlooked.

Spectral element formulation for damped transversely isotropic Micropolar-Cosserat layered composite panels

S. K. Singh et al.

Summary: This paper aims to develop governing equations of motion for in-plane dynamics of Micropolar-Cosserat composite models with damping, considering air damping and Kelvin-Voigt strain linear rate damping. The model is restricted to free-vibration and in-plane static response of the composite panel, assuming second-order micro-length of the fiber deformation. A transformation matrix based on Rodrigues' rotational formula is introduced to simplify the non-classical elastic formulation. The analytical response of damped composite panels is proposed based on available undamped simulation results.
