Tree species identity and mixing ratio affected the release of several metallic elements from mixed litter in coniferous-broadleaf plantations in subtropical China

Yunxing Bai et al.

Summary: Mixing different types of tree litter can alter the release and enrichment of metallic elements, thus affecting the cycling of metallic elements in plantations.

Influence of beech and spruce on potentially toxic elements-related health risk of edible mushrooms growing on unpolluted forest soils

Climate warming induced synchronous growth decline in Norway spruce populations across biogeographical gradients since 2000

Michal Bosela et al.

Summary: This study investigated the growth variability and climate sensitivity of 2851 Norway spruce trees in central-eastern Europe. It was found that summer weather significantly affects the radial growth of spruce trees, with the effects varying along biogeographical gradients. Extreme summer heatwaves in 2000 and 2003 reduced growth rates, especially in the southern Carpathians. The increased vulnerability of Norway spruce under warmer climate conditions suggests a need for forest services to replace monocultures with more drought-resilient mixtures.

Analysis of the spatial distribution of heavy metals in an area of farmland in Sichuan province, China

Xuefang Tang et al.

Summary: This study successfully visualized the spatial distribution of heavy metal pollution in farmland soil using GIS technology, showing that all heavy metal element concentrations exceeded the soil background values with Cr, Cd, and Zn having a 100% exceedance rate. The results indicated that the pollution accumulation of Cr, Cd, and Zn was serious, and their contents showed correlations with both structural and non-structural factors in the soil.

Mixed vs. monospecific mountain forests in response to climate change: structural and growth perspectives of Norway spruce and European beech

Zdenek Vacek et al.

Summary: Mixed forests play a crucial role in stability, production potential, and adaptation to climate change. The study focused on the influence of different ratios of Norway spruce and European beech on the production, structure, diversity, and growth of mixed forest stands in the Czech Republic. Results showed higher timber production and diversity in mixed stands compared to monocultures, with effects also observed from climatic factors and air pollution.

Vertical Distribution of Mercury in Forest Soils and Its Transfer to Edible Mushrooms in Relation to Tree Species

Vaclav Pecina et al.

Summary: Soil pollution by mercury is a global issue that poses risks to ecosystems and human health. The study found that mercury content was highest in the F+H layer of mature Norway spruce forests, with significantly higher levels in spruce compared to beech dominated stands. This suggests that species-related soil chemistry and mineral associations play a key role in the distribution and accumulation of mercury in forest soils.

Catchment Runoff in Industrial Areas Exports Legacy Pollutant Zinc from the Topsoil Rather than Geogenic Zn

Alexandre Andronikov et al.

Summary: The study indicates that in highly industrialized, densely populated parts of Central Europe, mobilization of legacy Zn pollution from forest ecosystems may negatively affect the quality of water resources, primarily due to atmospheric Zn input and temporarily stored pollutant Zn in the organic horizon.
