The relationship between blood pressure and risk of atrial fibrillation: a Mendelian randomization study

Summary: Observational studies have shown that elevated blood pressure is the leading risk factor for atrial fibrillation, and this study used Mendelian randomization to investigate the potential causal relationship between blood pressure levels and AF risk. The results suggest that there is a likely causal association between increased blood pressure levels and the risk of developing AF, and optimal blood pressure control might be an important therapeutic target for AF prevention independently from other risk factors.

Summary: This study analyzed the determinants of the 13-year risk of incident atrial fibrillation (AF) in a Russian population cohort and found that the risk is positively associated with male sex, age, body mass index (BMI), and systolic blood pressure (SBP), and negatively associated with total cholesterol (TC). In women, the risk of AF is more strongly associated with hypertension (HT) and negatively related to total cholesterol (TC) level.

The results showed that high systolic blood pressure, obesity with central obesity, and an inactive lifestyle were significantly associated with incident AF. Maintaining or achieving a lower burden of modifiable risk factors was associated with decreased AF risk.

The results showed that the risk factors for both diseases are different, indicating distinct pathophysiological pathways.
