A coupled elasto-plastic damage model for fine-grained sandstone under triaxial compression and lateral extension loading conditions

Susheng Wang et al.

Summary: A series of tests were conducted to investigate the mechanical behavior of rock under different loading conditions. The results show that lateral deformation is more sensitive than axial deformation under unloading process. Based on experimental data, a coupled elasto-plastic damage model was proposed, which successfully described the main mechanical behaviors of the rock under complex loading conditions.

Strength, energy evolution and cracking process of sandstone under high-temperature and high-pressure coupled true triaxial compression

Zhaolei Gao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of high temperature and high-stress environment on the mechanical properties and cracking characteristics of sandstone from Sichuan province, China using true triaxial compression tests. The results show that the angle of the sandstone failure plane decreases with the increase of the minimum principal stress, and is not significantly related to the intermediate principal stress. The deformation modulus and featuring stresses of the sandstone increase first and then decrease with the increase of temperature, reaching the maximum value at 90 degrees C. The crack initiation in the sandstone is delayed at temperatures lower than 90 degrees C and accelerated at temperatures higher than 90 degrees C.

Mechanical Properties and Permeability Evolution of Red Sandstone Subjected to Hydro-mechanical Coupling: Experiment and Discrete Element Modelling

Qiang Wang et al.

Summary: The study explores the hydro-mechanical behaviors of red sandstone under different stress conditions, showing that mechanical properties and permeability are influenced by changes in confining stress and seepage pressure. The permeability of the rock increases rapidly near peak stress, while also revealing insights on microcracking and how it affects the rock's behavior.

Experimental study of energy dissipation characteristics and crack coalescence modes of cracked sandstone under different cyclic loading paths

Kang Peng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of different loading modes on cracked sandstone, finding that cyclic loading increased deformation modulus compared to uniaxial compression. The dissipated energy densities of the samples increased differently under increasing and constant lower stress limit cyclic loading. The study also defined crack types and found that cyclic loading led to more cracks and surface spalling compared to uniaxial compression.

Time-dependent compaction of deep-water reservoirs: A study on the viscous behavior of unconsolidated sandstone

Raoof Gholami et al.

Summary: This study, based on a case study from a gas field in Australia, reveals that the compaction mechanism of deep-water sandstone reservoirs can exhibit elasto-plastic or viscoplastic behavior depending on the type of clays in the rock matrix, confining pressure, and loading rate. The deformation during compaction is shown to be time-dependent and influenced by the clay type in the sandstone matrix. Different behaviors are observed based on the presence of kaolinite or illite/smectite, with a transition to viscous response above a threshold confining pressure and a shift to viscoplastic deformation with increasing loading rate.
