The stress and deformation of stone column-improved soft clay by discrete element modelling

Meixiang Gu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the microscopic interaction and load transfer mechanism between a column and soft clay using the discrete element method (DEM). The results show that the stress distribution between the column and the soft clay changes significantly after loading, with part of the load being transferred from the column to the soft clay through strong particle interactions.

H Shaped Echelon Joints Under Uniaxial Loading

Vahab Sarfarazi et al.

Summary: The investigation explored the failure behavior of H shaped non-persistent cracks under uniaxial load through experimental tests and numerical modeling. It was found that crack propagation was controlled by the angle and length of the non-persistent joints. The compressive strength of the samples varied with the layout and failure mode of the joints, showing that the strength of specimens increased by decreasing the angle and length of the joint.

Crack propagation mechanism in rock-like specimens containing intermittent flaws under shear loading

Weibing Cai et al.

Summary: Through experiments and numerical simulations, the mechanism of crack initiation, propagation, and coalescence in rock-like materials with intermittent flaws under shear loading was investigated. The results showed that cracks with different dip angles have a significant impact on the failure patterns of specimens.

Experimental and numerical studies of brittle rock-like specimens with unfilled cross fissures under uniaxial compression

Han Wang et al.

Summary: Unfilled cross fissures in natural rocks significantly affect the mechanical behavior of the rock. The angle and length of these fissures influence the strength, elastic modulus, and final crack system morphology of rock-like specimens. Different parameters impact the crack development law and ultimate failure modes of the specimens.

Numerical simulation of mesomechanical properties of limestone containing dissolved hole and persistent joint

Shuai Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, numerical models were used to analyze the mechanical properties and failure behavior of limestone rock mass with circular holes and persistent joints. The results showed that the presence of circular holes and persistent joints can decrease the compressive strength and elastic modulus of the rock samples. Additionally, the steep dip angles of the persistent joints have a significant control effect on the mechanical properties of the rock samples. The initiation cracks under uniaxial compression mainly occur in the persistent joints and rock blocks, with the crack initiation stress in the persistent joint being smaller than in the corresponding rock block.
