The temporal pattern and lifestyle associations of respiratory virus infection in a cohort study spanning the first two years of life

Elizabeth Powell et al.

Summary: Respiratory virus infection is common in early childhood, whether symptomatic or asymptomatic. This study found that respiratory virus detection was positively associated with respiratory symptoms, gender, season, childcare, and living with other children, but not with breastfeeding. In this study spanning the first two years of life, no association was observed between early viral infection and doctor-diagnosed wheeze by age 2.

Incidence and seasonality of respiratory viruses among medically attended children with acute respiratory infections in an Ecuador birth cohort, 2011-2014

Eduardo Azziz-Baumgartner et al.

Summary: The study in Ecuador followed a birth cohort to identify respiratory virus burden, with findings showing high incidence of RSV and influenza among younger children. The majority of influenza cases occurred during the winter Southern Hemisphere influenza season between April and September.

Summary: The study found that respiratory syncytial virus, H influenzae, and M catarrhalis are major causes of severe LRTI in children, more common in children under 5 years old and during winter. Co-infections and incidental carriage of potentially pathogenic microbes are common occurrences.

Interference between rhinovirus and other RNA respiratory viruses in the first 2-years of life: A longitudinal community-based birth cohort study

Mari D. Takashima et al.

Summary: A strong, negative bidirectional association was observed between rhinovirus and other RNA viruses in a longitudinal study conducted on a community-based cohort of young Australian children, suggesting within-host interference between RNA respiratory viruses.

Epidemiology of respiratory syncytial virus in a community birth cohort of infants in the first 2 years of life

Summary: RSV is a common virus in children, with a high incidence in the community setting. Most infections are symptomatic and managed within the community. The incidence increases with age and childcare attendance, with the highest rates in autumn.

Prospective Study of the Performance of Parent-Collected Nasal and Saliva Swab Samples, Compared with Nurse-Collected Swab Samples, for the Molecular Detection of Respiratory Microorganisms

Claire A. Woodall et al.

Summary: A study compared the performance of parent-collected and nurse-collected swab samples in detecting respiratory pathogens in children with RTI symptoms. The results showed that parent-collected nasal swab samples performed comparably to nurse-collected samples, while saliva swab samples lacked sensitivity for detecting respiratory microbes. This suggests that parent-collected swab samples could reduce the burden on community health care systems without compromising diagnostic effectiveness.
