Uncertainty of nitrogen budget in China

Xiuming Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates uncertainties in China's nitrogen budget using the CHANS model and Monte Carlo simulation, finding that spatial and temporal variations in agricultural and industrial activities, along with insufficient knowledge on nitrogen cycling, are the main causes of uncertainties. Nitrogen inputs have uncertainties of <10%, outputs <30%, and accumulations >30%. Nitrogen oxides emission is sensitive to energy consumption, while ammonia emission is predominantly affected by agricultural activity.

Field experiments and model simulation based evaluation of rice yield response to projected climate change in Southeastern China

Weilu Wang et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of climate change on rice yield and found that rising CO2 and temperature had negative effects, especially towards the end of the century. The findings may be useful for policymakers in developing strategies to improve future rice productivity in Southeastern China.

High yields of hybrid rice do not require more nitrogen fertilizer than inbred rice: A meta-analysis

Le Xu et al.

Summary: The study found that the higher grain yield of hybrid rice is mainly attributed to higher total nitrogen uptake and internal nitrogen use efficiency, rather than nitrogen fertilizer input. Hybrid rice does not necessarily require more nitrogen fertilizer than inbred rice to achieve higher yield, suggesting that it can be planted with less external nitrogen input to ensure food security and reduce environmental costs.

Soil Nitrous Oxide Emissions by Atmospheric Nitrogen Deposition over Global Agricultural Systems

Yuyu Yang et al.

Summary: Agricultural soil is the main source of nitrous oxide emissions, with atmospheric nitrogen deposition as an important factor in increasing soil N2O emissions. The study shows that N deposition accounts for a significant portion of global cropland soil N2O emissions and predicts a substantial increase in emissions due to N deposition and climate change by 2100.

Meta-analysis of yield and nitrous oxide outcomes for nitrogen management in agriculture

Tai M. Maaz et al.

Summary: Improving nitrogen use efficiency is crucial for future food security and environmental sustainability, with agriculture being the main global emitter of nitrous oxide. By analyzing the impact of nitrogen management on emissions and yield, it was found that performance indicators are more effective in predicting nitrous oxide emissions compared to nitrogen rates. Additionally, tailored nutrient management strategies are recommended to balance nitrogen levels and minimize emissions while maintaining high crop yields across different regions.

A new canopy chlorophyll index-based paddy rice critical nitrogen dilution curve in eastern China

Ke Zhang et al.

Summary: Nitrogen is crucial for crop growth, and canopy vegetation indexes and chlorophyll concentration are valuable tools for diagnosing crop N status. This study evaluated different chlorophyll-related indexes and GS values for N nutrient diagnosis in Japonica rice, finding that CCI-based Nc curve had better accuracy and lower bias than GS values-based curves. CCI was also found to be a useful predictor of grain yield in total growth periods.

Noelie Borghino et al.

Summary: TLCA is a promising method for assessing environmental impacts of agricultural activities and supporting informed decision making. Through a study in a territory in the Aube department in France, it was found that TLCA can be used to evaluate the impact of material flows between sectors and estimate the environmental impacts of future strategies.

Urbanization can benefit agricultural production with large-scale farming in China

Sitong Wang et al.

Summary: The increase in China's urbanization level has the potential to release rural land for agricultural production, leading to higher crop yields. This targeted urbanization could also reduce cropland fragmentation, benefiting large-scale farming and environmental protection efforts.
