Cellular distribution of cannabinoid-related receptors TRPV1, PPAR-gamma, GPR55 and GPR3 in the equine cervical dorsal root ganglia

Giorgia Galiazzo et al.

Summary: This study localized the cellular distribution of four putative cannabinoid-related receptors in the equine cervical dorsal root ganglia, revealing their presence in sensory neurons, satellite glial cells, macrophages, and other interneuronal cells. The findings provide an anatomical basis for exploring the therapeutic uses of non-psychotropic cannabinoid agonists for pain management in horses.

Pharmacokinetics, Safety, and Synovial Fluid Concentrations of Single-and Multiple-Dose Oral Administration of 1 and 3 mg/kg Cannabidiol in Horses

Alicia F. Yocom et al.

Summary: This study investigated the pharmacokinetic profile, short-term safety, and synovial fluid levels of CBD in horses after oral administration. The results showed that CBD had variable oral bioavailability and could be detected in the synovial fluid at steady state. However, mild adverse effects were observed, including hypocalcemia and elevated liver enzymes, which improved or normalized within a short period of time.

Pharmacokinetics of cannabidiol in a randomized crossover trial in senior horses

Shelley E. Turner et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the pharmacokinetics, bioavailability, and pharmacological effects of cannabidiol (CBD) in senior horses. The results showed that CBD and its metabolites were detectable up to 8 hours after administration, with 7-COOH CBD being the predominant metabolite. The oral bioavailability of CBD was 7.92%. CBD had no meaningful effect on CBC, serum biochemical analyses, or vital signs for any horse.

Promising Nanocarriers to Enhance Solubility and Bioavailability of Cannabidiol for a Plethora of Therapeutic Opportunities

Lucia Grifoni et al.

Summary: The interest in cannabidiol (CBD) has led to the development of nanosized formulations that increase solubility, encapsulation efficiency, and stability of CBD, as well as enable sustained release. While some studies are still in the preliminary stages, many of these nanosystems are ready for clinical translation and offer promising therapeutic opportunities.

Safety and Efficacy of the Therapeutic Use of Cannabis-Based Products in the Treatment of Dogs: An Integrative Review

Diego Fontana de Andrade et al.

Summary: The safety and efficacy of cannabis-based products in the treatment of dogs are discussed in this article through a comprehensive review. Based on the literature review, products rich in CBD and with low concentrations or without THC are considered safe for dogs, and they have the potential to improve the quality of life and reduce pain perception in dogs with osteoarthritis. Clinical trials considering the individual characteristics of each product are strongly encouraged.

Summary: This study aimed to provide preliminary data on the safety and efficacy of cannabidiol (CBD) for relieving pain associated with canine osteoarthritis using objective outcome measures. No significant differences in symptom relief were found between CBD and placebo groups, but adverse events such as elevated liver enzymes and vomiting were observed in some dogs receiving CBD treatment.

Regenerative Medicine for Equine Musculoskeletal Diseases

Iris Ribitsch et al.

Summary: Regenerative medicine is a promising field in equine veterinary practice, with therapies already in use to treat tendon injuries, tendinopathies, cartilage injuries, and degenerative joint disorders. Despite promising results, the outcomes of these treatments are diverse due to unknown spatiotemporal requirements for tissue regeneration. Further research is needed to fully exploit the potential of regenerative medicine in equine patients.
