Influences on the trajectory and subsequent outcomes in CDKL5 deficiency disorder

Helen Leonard et al.

Summary: This study found that patients with better early seizure control showed slightly improved development later, suggesting that an individual child's trajectory is not necessarily predetermined and could possibly be influenced by optimal seizure management. This has implications for children's quality of life.

Caregiver assessment of quality of life in individuals with genetic developmental and epileptic encephalopathies

Stacey R. Cohen et al.

Summary: This study aims to assess quality of life (QoL) and its determinants in individuals with developmental and epileptic encephalopathies (DEEs) through a tailored questionnaire. The results show that QoL scores are strongly associated with the number of seizure-free days, medication side effects, genetic diagnosis, and community type. Individuals with DEEs have significantly lower QoL scores compared to those with Rett syndrome, cerebral palsy, autism spectrum disorder, and Down syndrome. Assessing QoL in DEEs using a standardized instrument may serve as an independent outcome measure in precision medicine trials.

CDKL5 deficiency disorder: clinical features, diagnosis, and management

Helen Leonard et al.

Summary: CDKL5 deficiency disorder (CDD) is a developmental epileptic encephalopathy characterized by early-onset seizures, severe developmental impairment, and common gastrointestinal, sleep, and musculoskeletal problems. It has a higher prevalence of cerebral visual impairment compared to other developmental epileptic encephalopathies. Currently, there is limited evidence regarding effective treatment for CDD, but further treatment trials are underway.

Exploring quality of life in individuals with a severe developmental and epileptic encephalopathy, CDKL5 Deficiency Disorder

Helen Leonard et al.

Summary: CDKL5 Deficiency Disorder is a rare genetic disorder characterized by early onset seizures and severe developmental delay. Factors such as functional impairment, the number of anti-epileptic medications used, and geographical region were found to be associated with quality of life in individuals with this disorder.
