Attitudes toward epilepsy assessed by the SAPE questionnaire in Germany - Comparison of its psychometric properties and results in a web-based vs. face-to-face survey

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of a new questionnaire (SAPE) measuring attitudes toward people with epilepsy, compare the effects of web-based and face-to-face surveys on attitudes, and identify predictors of attitudes. The results indicated satisfactory reliability and validity of the SAPE scales, with minimal differences between survey modes. Fears and concerns were more pronounced than stereotypes and social distance in both surveys. However, the face-to-face survey showed slightly more negative attitudes toward people with epilepsy, and personal experiences and knowledge about epilepsy were significant predictors of positive attitudes.

Most studies are conducted in high-income countries, neglecting the substantial need in low- and middle-income countries. Summary: The study found that the knowledge level of the US public on epilepsy is low, with only a small percentage of people understanding epilepsy and seizure first aid. While most people are familiar with symptoms of generalized seizures compared to focal seizures. Only a very small percentage of people have heard of public awareness campaigns related to epilepsy, but about one-third of adults expressed a desire to learn more about epilepsy.
