Towards triglycerides-based biorefineries: Hydrolysis-reforming-hydrogenation in one-pot over Ni/γ-Al2O3 based catalysts

Camilo Aurelio B. Crisostomo et al.

Summary: The study assessed the efficiency of Ni/gamma-Al2O3 and Ni-Sn/gamma-Al2O3 catalysts for hydrolysis-reforming-hydrogenation reactions in soybean oil, showing that gamma-Al2O3 was the best catalyst for hydrolysis and Ni/gamma-Al2O3 calcined at 300 degrees C was the best monometallic catalyst for stearic acid production. The addition of tin improved the reactions by enhancing H-2 production and selectivity towards saturated fatty acids.

Renewable polymers and plastics: Performance beyond the green

Alessandro Pellis et al.

Summary: Research has shown that more than 70% of the costs associated with plastics come from the extraction and processing of fossil raw materials, and the price of fossil-based plastics would increase by 44% if businesses fully covered this impact. Therefore, disclosing the hidden costs of plastics can dispel the myth of the expensiveness of renewable polymers. However, market adoption of bio-based plastics should be based on their functional properties rather than just their green credentials.

Synthesis of Bio-Based Aliphatic Polyesters from Plant Oils by Efficient Molecular Catalysis: A Selected Survey from Recent Reports

Kotohiro Nomura et al.

Summary: Recent progress in the efficient synthesis of (unsaturated) 1,omega-fatty acid diesters as monomers for long chain aliphatic polyesters, including Pd-catalyzed isomerization, Ru-catalyzed olefin metathesis, and polycondensation reactions. The depolymerization methods for these polyesters, such as olefin metathesis and treatment with alcohols, were also discussed. The development of catalysts for these reactions is crucial for efficient synthesis.

Novel oleate hydratases and potential biotechnological applications

Peter Leon Hagedoorn et al.

Summary: Oleate hydratase catalyzes the addition of water to oleic acid to produce (R)-10-hydroxystearic acid, with the potential for a wide range of unsaturated fatty acids. Through protein engineering and directed evolution, the substrate scope can be expanded to produce various products, including keto-fatty acids and secondary alcohols, using multi-enzyme cascades.
