Biosynthesis of Amyl Alcohol From Scenedesmus quadricauda Microalgae for Light Commercial Vehicle Compression Ignition Engine Using Prediction Models

Ashwin Jacob et al.

Summary: This study explores the use of third-generation microalgae feedstock to produce sustainable biofuels and evaluates their performance in internal combustion engines. The results show that the synthesized biofuel exhibits higher brake thermal efficiency and lower emissions of particulate matter and carbon monoxide compared to conventional diesel. However, nitrogen oxide emissions increase as a tradeoff for the improved combustion characteristics achieved with the biofuel.

Production of Chlorella pyrenoidosa biodiesel by heterotrophic pathway to improve CI engine output characteristics using statistical approaches

Ashwin Jacob et al.

Summary: The alarming increase in greenhouse gases from on-road vehicles and the depletion of cultivable land for fuel has prompted researchers to seek alternative means of biofuel production. This study explores the cultivation of Chlorella pyrenoidosa microalgae using different bioreactor combinations for the sustainable synthesis of low-density biodiesel. Statistical tools are used to develop prediction models for optimal experimental outputs. The study found that scaling-up the cultivation in stir-tank bioreactors resulted in high lipid content and biomass concentrations. The highest biodiesel conversion rate of 98% was achieved at optimal reaction temperature and time. Prediction models showed that the low-density CP20 blend improved brake thermal efficiency and reduced smoke emissions.

Study of performance, combustion, and emissions parameters of DI-diesel engine fueled with algae biodiesel/diesel/n-pentane blends

Medhat Elkelawy et al.

Summary: In this study, biodiesel extracted from Scenedesmus obliquus algae was used as a blend of B50 with diesel. By adding n-pentane as an enhancer additive in varying amounts, engine performance was enhanced with the best results achieved at 15 ml per liter. While there was an increase in nitrogen oxides emission in exhaust gases, hydrocarbons emission decreased compared to B50, indicating the significant impact of n-pentane addition.

Influence of exhaust gas temperature and air-fuel ratio on NOx aftertreatment performance of five large passenger cars

Zamir Mera et al.

Summary: This study analyzed real-world NOx emissions and found that some vehicles exceeded the Euro 6 limits. Vehicles equipped with SCR systems had emission factors only 1.0 times the limit, while HEVs had very low emissions at approximately 2 mg NOx km(-1). Cold start, urban driving, and cooling conditions of aftertreatment devices could lead to a decrease in NOx conversion efficiency.
