Recovery of dissolved methane through a flat sheet module with PDMS, PP, and PVDF membranes

R. Jimenez-Robles et al.

Summary: This study investigates the performance of commercial polymer membranes in recovering dissolved methane from water using a flat sheet membrane module degassing contactor. The results show that the mass transfer resistance mainly occurs in the liquid phase. Microscopy and contact angle measurements are used to monitor the structural and surface stability of the membranes during operation. This combination of techniques proves to be versatile and useful in tracking the changes in membrane properties.

Membrane distillation treatment of landfill leachate: Characteristics and mechanism of membrane fouling

Zhongsen Yan et al.

Summary: In this study, the membrane fouling in landfill leachate treatment by membrane distillation was systematically investigated. It was found that the increase of feed pH enhanced the deprotonation of carboxyl groups in organic matter, contributing to the formation of organo-inorganic complexation, which might be the main cause of membrane fouling in alkaline feed condition.

Wetting- and fouling-resistant hollow fiber membranes for dissolved methane recovery from anaerobic wastewater treatment effluents

G. S. M. D. P. Sethunga et al.

Summary: Anaerobic wastewater treatment processes are increasingly popular due to their advantages in sludge management and net energy consumption, with methane production being a major benefit. Utilizing porous membranes for membrane contactor (MC) process offers a promising way to recover dissolved methane (dCH4) from anaerobic effluents, although membrane wetting and fouling remain implementation challenges. The development of wetting- and fouling-resistant hollow fiber membranes coated with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and post-treated with PDMS-based amphiphilic copolymers shows improved performance in recovering methane from anaerobic effluents, making it a viable alternative for industrial practices.
