Unveiling the mechanism of construction workers' unsafe behaviors from an occupational stress perspective: A qualitative and quantitative examination of a stress-cognition-safety model

Qi Liang et al.

Summary: The research highlights that cognitive factors are precursors of safety behaviors, and that stress plays a significant role in inducing unsafe behaviors among construction workers. Through a mixed methods approach, the study develops a Stress-Cognition-Safety model, revealing how stress indirectly affects unsafe behaviors through cognitive factors, and how physical and emotional stress directly induce such behaviors. Recommendations for stress management seminars, safety inspections, and communication are proposed to address these issues in the construction industry.

Country report Exploring the effects of spatial distance on public perception of waste-to-energy incineration projects

Qianqian Zhou et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of spatial distance on residents' perceptions of potentially harmful facilities using two waste-to-energy incineration plants in Zhejiang province, China. The results show that residents have low acceptance and high perceived risk of the incinerators, and spatial distance has a marginal zone effect on their level of perceived risk. Furthermore, the perception of economic benefits, trust, fairness, and acceptance of the incinerators has a ripple effect. The impact of spatial distance can be mitigated through community engagement approvals and economic compensation.

Repeated stress exposure leads to structural synaptic instability prior to disorganization of hippocampal coding and impairments in learning

Alireza Chenani et al.

Summary: Stress exposure can adversely affect brain structure and function, leading to cognitive deficits and increased risk for psychiatric disorders. This study used longitudinal deep-brain optical imaging to explore the impact of stress exposure on activity patterns and structural plasticity of dorsal CA1 pyramidal neurons, as well as hippocampal-dependent learning and memory. The findings revealed that repeated stress increased neuronal activity, disrupting the temporal structure and spatial coding. Additionally, the study showed that repeated stress led to a decrease in spinogenesis and spine stability, while acute stress resulted in the stabilization of spines. These findings suggest that loss of structural connectivity mediates the transition from increased activity to impaired temporal organization and spatial information in the dorsal CA1 region under repeated stress exposure.

Perceptions of justice influencing community acceptance of spent nuclear fuel disposal. A case study in two Finnish nuclear communities

Tuuli Vilhunen et al.

Summary: The final disposal of spent nuclear fuel is an ethical issue with implications across generations. A survey conducted in two Finnish nuclear communities revealed that residents perceive both intragenerational and intergenerational injustices in the procedures and distribution of risks and benefits of a proposed repository. Trust and perceptions of justice were found to be related to acceptance of the repository. The community with longer experience in nuclear waste management expressed greater mistrust and perceived greater procedural injustice, while the community with less experience was more concerned about intragenerational distributive justice. However, both communities expressed similar concerns over intergenerational justice. Additionally, having more experience in nuclear waste management did not lead to greater local acceptance.

An exploration of the political, social, economic and cultural factors affecting how different global regions initially reacted to the COVID-19 pandemic

Julian W. Tang et al.

Summary: Responses to the early COVID-19 pandemic varied globally, with Asian populations being more collectivist and self-sacrificing, quickly responding to the pandemic and complying with restrictions. Other regions also imposed restrictions promptly due to concerns for their society and healthcare systems. Western European and North American countries initially reacted more slowly, aiming to protect their economies and delay restrictions on personal freedoms.

The impact of item parceling on structural parameter invariance in multi-group structural equation modeling

Jihyun Lee et al.

Summary: The study found that, under a correctly specified measurement invariance model, indicator type would not introduce bias in structural parameter estimates. Estimation and statistical decisions depend on the assumption for measurement (non-)invariance and testing method rather than the indicator type. Falsely assuming measurement invariance may lead to biased latent mean or structural path differences and incorrect statistical decisions in testing.
