Metabolomics in liver injury induced by dietary cadmium exposure and protective effect of calcium supplementation

Meng Zhao et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the effect of calcium supplementation on cadmium-induced liver injury in rats and its potential metabolic mechanisms. The results showed that calcium supplementation could reverse the abnormal biochemical parameters and liver histopathology induced by cadmium exposure, and the metabolomics analysis revealed several distinct regulatory pathways.

Screening and validation of biomarkers for cadmium-induced liver injury based on targeted bile acid metabolomics

Meng Tian et al.

Summary: The study found that cadmium exposure caused liver injury in rats, and serum bile acids are a simple, feasible, and suitable method to assess Cd-induced liver injury. The research indicates that substances such as GUDCA, GLCA, TDCA, and TLCA may be potential biomarkers for Cd-induced liver injury.

Role of Autophagy in Cadmium-Induced Hepatotoxicity and Liver Diseases

Suryakant Niture et al.

Summary: Cadmium is a toxic pollutant that can be easily absorbed into the human body through air contamination, industrial pollution, cigarette smoke, food, and water, affecting the liver, kidneys, and lungs and leading to various diseases, including cancer. Research has shown that cadmium affects liver function and hepatic autophagy, contributing to hepatotoxicity and liver diseases.

Biomarkers of effect as determined in human biomonitoring studies on hexavalent chromium and cadmium in the period 2008-2020

Celia Ventura et al.

Summary: This study aimed to identify effect biomarkers linking Cr(VI) and Cd exposure to selected adverse outcomes (AOs) including cancer, immunotoxicity, oxidative stress, and omics/epigenetics. Most commonly analyzed effect biomarkers for Cr(VI) exposure were those indicating oxidative stress and DNA or chromosomal damage, while for Cd exposure, 0-2-microglobulin and N-acetyl-0-D-glucosaminidase were well-established biomarkers for renal tubular dysfunction. Neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin and kidney injury molecule-1 could serve as sensitive biomarkers of acute kidney injury in response to both metals. More HBM data is needed to confirm the significance of omics-based biomarkers associated with Cr and Cd exposure.

Urinary metabolic characterization with nephrotoxicity for residents under cadmium exposure

Ting Zeng et al.

Summary: Under cadmium exposure, regardless of gender, the metabolic pathways primarily affected include the creatine pathway, amino acid metabolism especially tryptophan metabolism, aminoacyl-tRNA biosynthesis, and purine metabolism as the concentration of urinary cadmium increases. Specific biomarkers linked with nephrotoxicity such as creatine, creatinine, L-tryptophan, adenine, and uric acid were detected based on statistical analysis. The study outcome may provide valuable information for reflecting body burden and improving health policy for risk assessment.

Chronic cadmium exposure at environmental-relevant level accelerates the development of hepatotoxicity to hepatocarcinogenesis

Yajie Xu et al.

Summary: The study revealed that chronic low-dose Cd exposure promotes liver toxicity, fibrosis, inflammation, and cancer progression in mouse models. Cd also enhances angiogenesis and fibrosis, with PPAR and ERBB signaling pathways identified as potential pathways for the toxicity of chronic Cd exposure. The effects of Cd on fibrosis and angiogenesis were more pronounced in male mice.

Environmental Exposure during Pregnancy: Influence on Prenatal Development and Early Life: A Comprehensive Review

M. Dolores Gomez-Roig et al.

Summary: Preconception and prenatal exposure to environmental contaminants can have long-term effects on health, particularly during pregnancy, neonatal period, and childhood. Substances like alcohol and smoking can lead to fetal abnormalities and developmental issues, while endocrine-disrupting chemicals and heavy metals in food may alter hormone levels and impact fetal health. The growing evidence on the negative effects of air pollutants on pregnancy highlights the importance of considering environmental exposures as a major public health issue during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
