Removal of pathogens from greywater using green roofs combined with chlorination

Ioanna Petousi et al.

Summary: This study examined the microbiological quality of treated greywater produced by nature-based technology and a chlorination process. The results showed that increasing substrate depth and using vegetation can effectively reduce bacterial concentration, but disinfection is still necessary to meet indoor reuse standards.

Quantity and quality characteristics of greywater from an Indian household

Irshad N. Shaikh et al.

Summary: A year-long study was conducted to assess the quantity and quality characteristics of greywater generated from different sources of an Indian household. The effect of source separation on greywater quantity and pollutant load contribution was also assessed. The results showed that kitchen and laundry greywater were the major contributors to pollutant load.

Modelling and simulation of subsurface horizontal flow constructed wetlands

Roberto Aguado et al.

Summary: Due to poor sanitation systems, a significant amount of wastewater is dumped, posing a threat to public health and causing water stress. However, by purifying and reusing wastewater for irrigation, the efficiency of water management can be improved. Constructed wetlands are a preferred option for grey water purification, especially in developing countries.

Combination of foam fractionation and photo-Fenton like processes for greywater treatment

Antonio Faggiano et al.

Summary: The study developed a compact unit for greywater treatment by combining physical foam fractionation and photo-driven advanced oxidation. Evaluation of different parameters showed that the combination of foam fractionation with H2O2/Fe-IDS/UV-C was effective in COD removal and using sunlight as a light source for sustainability.

Optical Properties of Water for Prediction of Wastewater Contamination, Human-Associated Bacteria, and Fecal Indicator Bacteria in Surface Water at Three Watershed Scales

Steven R. Corsi et al.

Summary: The study developed relationships between the spectral absorbance and fluorescence properties of water and human-associated and fecal indicator bacteria, to aid field sensor applications for estimating wastewater contamination in waterways. Regression analysis showed that bacteria concentrations could be estimated by optical properties at watershed and subwatershed scales, with human virus occurrence increasing with modeled human-associated bacteria concentration. However, regressions for small-scale sites were not reliable due to inconsistent local sanitary sewer inputs.

Soft sensor predictor of E. coli concentration based on conventional monitoring parameters for wastewater disinfection control

Jacopo Foschi et al.

Summary: Real-time acquisition of indicator bacteria concentration is essential for chemical and ultraviolet wastewater disinfection, but culture-based methods are time-consuming. A novel soft sensor approach based on artificial neural networks outperformed linear models. Sensitivity analysis highlighted the importance of predictors and site-specific relationships. The artificial neural network model showed significant disinfectant savings in a realistic wastewater quality scenario.
