Evaluation and prediction of water quality in the dammed estuaries and rivers of Taihu Lake

Xi Chen et al.

Summary: Proper evaluation of water quality and prediction of eutrophication trend are essential for estuarine habitat restoration. Various methods like TLI, WQI, NPI, and RF model were used to assess water quality in Taihu Lake estuaries. It was found that controlling nutrient concentrations and sediment disturbance are key factors in improving estuarine water quality.

Jing Xu et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the phosphorus transfer process and influence factors at the Sediment-Water Interface (SWI) in the Huaihe River. The findings highlighted the role of riverbed sediment as a pollution sink, the significant impact of land use on phosphorus, and the applicability of the proposed model in other polluted rivers.

Risk Assessment of Water Quantity and Quality Stressors to Balance the Use and Protection of Vulnerable Water Resources

Melissa Wade et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates how multiple water quality, flow, and other stressors that cumulatively affect the sustainability of the lower Thukela River in South Africa can be evaluated using the relative risk model, Bayesian network (RRM-BN) approach. This risk assessment aims to establish minimum water quality and flow requirements to maintain system sustainability and help make trade-off decisions between water resource use and protection.

Total phosphorus and climate are equally important predictors of water quality in lakes

Arnab Shuvo et al.

Summary: Nutrient inputs, climate, and lake geomorphometry have significant impacts on primary production in freshwater lakes globally, with total phosphorus being a major driver. Efforts to mitigate water quality degradation need to not only focus on nutrient management, but also consider the synergistic effects of climatic factors in water quality management.

Prioritizing risk mitigation measures for binary heavy metal contamination emergencies at the watershed scale using bayesian decision networks

Jing Liu et al.

Summary: This study proposed a probabilistic model based on Bayesian Decision Network to quantitatively prioritize risk mitigation strategies for heavy metal emergencies using the DPSIR framework. By embedding a Copula-based exposure risk model, the results showed that comprehensive measures were the best option for reducing ecological and human health risks.

Application of Modified Cloud Model-Level Eigenvalue Method in water quality evaluation

Dongmei Ruan et al.

Summary: The study proposed a MCM-LEM model based on cloud model theory for evaluating groundwater quality, calculating weight of parameters, establishing one-dimensional and multi-dimensional cloud models to assess membership degree of water samples, and using LEM to determine water quality level. The results showed that the model could comprehensively consider fuzziness and randomness, providing scientific and objective evaluation results.

A multivariate Bayesian network analysis of water quality factors influencing trihalomethanes formation in drinking water distribution systems

Rebecca A. Li et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the application of Bayesian Network models to predict trihalomethanes concentration in drinking water distribution systems, using various water quality parameters. The best-performing models were selected and found to have high predictive accuracies for Sydney and South East Queensland. The developed modeling procedure can now be applied to develop system-specific Bayesian network models for trihalomethanes prediction in other drinking water distribution systems.

Simulation study on the migration of F- in soil around Chagan Lake, China

Peng Xu et al.

Summary: The study found that fluoride ions in the soil around Chagan Lake penetrate the soil column more quickly under alkaline conditions, and the HYDRUS model has a high degree of fit. Parameters such as saturated hydraulic conductivity, adsorption coefficient, and soil bulk density have a greater impact on the migration of fluoride ions in the soil. In the prediction scenario, due to the adsorption and interception of the vadose zone, as the depth increases, the time it takes for fluoride ions to accumulate is also longer.

Effect of extraction methods on mobilizable colloids and associated phosphorus from reservoir sediment

Diep N. Nguyen et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the effects of different extraction methods on the characteristics of water-mobilizable colloids from reservoir sediment, finding that agitation method released low-energy colloids with less damage, while sonication method released a higher quantity of colloids but in smaller size. Alkaline pH condition intensified colloid release but may cause dissolution of phosphate minerals.

Early warning of water quality degradation: A copula-based Bayesian network model for highly efficient water quality risk assessment

Ruolan Yu et al.

Summary: In the study, a Copula-based Bayesian network (CBN) method was proposed to evaluate water quality risk with multiple environmental indicators in a large drinking water reservoir in Tianjin, China. TN and NH3-N were identified as key risk indicators, and different seasons and locations were found to affect water quality risk. The CBN method was suggested as a valuable decision-support tool for reservoir managers and scientists.
