Pollution status and human health risk assessment of potentially toxic elements and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in urban street dust of Tyumen city, Russia

Elizaveta Konstantinova et al.

Summary: This study investigated the pollution levels and sources of PTEs and PAHs in urban street dust in Tyumen city, Russia. The results showed that transportation is the main source of these elements, and some elements had higher concentrations compared to other large cities. The study also found that the pollution level of street dust is more closely related to the number of roadway lanes. The risks associated with exposure to Co, Ni, V, and As were found to be noncarcinogenic, with negligible risk for adults and moderate risk for children.

Source apportionment and health risk assessment for potentially toxic elements in size-fractionated road dust in Busan Metropolitan City, Korea

Hyeryeong Jeong et al.

Summary: The pollution level of potentially toxic elements in road dust in Busan Metropolitan City was investigated, and the health risks to humans were evaluated. The study found that the concentrations of these elements were higher in fine particles and most likely came from non-exhaust traffic-related sources. Certain metals posed higher health risks for both adults and children, especially at sampling sites with heavy traffic and industries. Continuous monitoring and management of these metals are necessary to protect human health and the urban environment.

Impact of particle sizes on health risks and source-specific health risks for heavy metals in road dust

Cong Men et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the impact of particle sizes on sources and health risks of heavy metals by collecting and sifting road dust samples in Beijing. The results showed that particle size had a significant influence on the mass distribution and concentrations of heavy metals. In terms of health risks, particles smaller than 74 μm contributed the most to carcinogenic risks, while particles larger than 250 μm had negligible contributions. The sources of health risks also varied among different particle sizes, with traffic exhaust and fuel combustion being the main contributors in particles smaller than 74 μm, and construction being the highest contributor in the range of 74-250 μm particles.

Outi Meinander et al.

Summary: Dust particles from high latitudes have significant implications for climate and the environment. Identifying the locations and intensity of dust sources in these regions is crucial for understanding their impacts on the Earth's systems. This study quantifies the source intensity of high-latitude dust and identifies its potential global distribution. The findings highlight the seasonal character of most high-latitude dust sources and the influence of weather conditions on dust emissions. Additionally, the study emphasizes the need to improve the representation of high-latitude dust in models and assess its environmental and climate significance.

Toward more intercomparable road dust studies

Christof Lanzerstorfer

Summary: Studies on road dust (RDS) have shown that the concentrations of metals like Cu, Pb, and Zn are size-dependent, making comparison of results from different studies meaningless. A standardized sample preparation sequence is proposed in this work, suggesting the separation of samples into four size fractions to address this issue. Separating the samples into size fractions allows for the calculation of metal concentrations for RDS bulk samples with different upper size limits (USLs).

Size-Segregated Elemental Profile and Associated Heath Risk Assessment of Road Dust along Major Traffic Corridors in Kolkata Mega City

Deepanjan Majumdar et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the particle size distribution of road dust in Kolkata mega city, revealing a predominance of coarse particles and higher elemental concentrations in fine particles. Although Cd and Li showed high enrichment compared to the Earth's crust, only Cd posed significant ecological risk. Individual elements did not pose significant non-cancer health risks, except for Li in children, but the cumulative non-cancer risk from all toxic elements for children was almost four times higher than the acceptable level. Lifetime exposure to carcinogenic elements at the current level may pose 5 to 6 times higher cancer risk in the adult population than the acceptable risk of one in a million.

Exploration of the variations and relationships between trace metal enrichment in dust and ecological risks associated with rapid urban expansion

Liwen Chen et al.

Summary: Trace metals in street dust in different zones of Nanchang city were assessed using the enrichment factor (EF), showing regional and seasonal variations. While Zn, Cd, and Pb exhibited similar variations, likely influenced by industrial and traffic emissions, Ni and As were found to have different sources, with Ni being influenced by land use type and As by natural sources. Industrial discharges and traffic emissions were identified as the main sources of trace metals, with significant regional differences in their contributions to pollution levels. Additionally, areas with high ecological risk index (ERI) corresponded to seriously polluted areas, indicating a complex relationship between EFs and environmental risk.
