Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon and its effects on human health: An overeview

Manthar Ali Mallah et al.

Summary: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are chemical contaminants of environmental significance. PAH pollution mainly comes from anthropogenic sources and can pose a significant threat to human health. Long-term exposure to PAHs can lead to tumor development in multiple organs and increase the risk of lung cancer and cardiovascular diseases. Studies have shown a relationship between PAH exposure, oxidative stress, and atherosclerosis.

Endocrine disruptors: Challenges and future directions in epidemiologic research

V Ho et al.

Summary: Public concern about the impact of endocrine disrupting chemicals on human and environmental health is increasing. Epidemiologic research plays a key role in understanding the relationship between EDC exposure and health outcomes, but faces challenges related to study design, methodological choices, and result interpretation. An integrative approach involving expertise in epidemiology, exposure science, risk assessment, and toxicology is essential for adequately studying the health risks associated with EDCs and addressing their challenges.

Resistance of mitochondrial DNA to cadmium and Aflatoxin B1 damage-induced germline mutation accumulation in C. elegans

Tess C. Leuthner et al.

Summary: Mitochondrial DNA is prone to mutation, but the processes that regulate mtDNA mutation are not fully understood. In Caenorhabditis elegans, we found widespread mtDNA heteroplasmy and identified C:G -> A:T mutations, which are associated with oxidative damage, as the dominant form of mtDNA mutation. Exposure to two nuclear genome mutagens did not affect mtDNA mutation frequency or spectrum, but significantly increased nuclear mutation rate. Mutants with defective mitophagy accumulated higher levels of mtDNA damage but had only small differences in mtDNA mutation compared to wild-type. These findings suggest the existence of additional mechanisms that regulate mtDNA mutation across generations.

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) Exposure Triggers Inflammation and Endothelial Dysfunction in BALB/c Mice: A Pilot Study

Gabriel A. Rojas et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of PAH exposure on systemic pro-inflammatory cytokines and markers of endothelial dysfunction. The results showed that PAHs present in air pollution stimulated the increase in serum inflammatory cytokines and the expression of markers of endothelial dysfunction in the murine model studied.

Blood and Urine Inorganic and Organic Mercury Levels in the United states from 1999 to 2016

Siu Chung Anson So et al.

Summary: The study found that organic mercury levels in the blood of the US population, including children and pregnant women, increased significantly from 1999 to 2016. However, there was a steady decline in both blood inorganic mercury and urine mercury levels during the same period.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon metabolites and mortality risk in an adult population

Yuan-Yuei Chen et al.

Summary: The study found that environmental PAH exposure among the adult population is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular mortality, but not cancer mortality. Future studies are needed to determine the underlying mechanisms related to these findings.

Perturbation of serum metabolome in relation to type 2 diabetes mellitus and urinary levels of phthalate metabolites and bisphenols

Yishuang Duan et al.

Summary: This study identified differential metabolic biomarkers related to T2DM, particularly in galactose metabolism, amino acid metabolism, and pyrimidine metabolism. The positive associations between most urinary mPAEs and T2DM suggest that PAE exposure may contribute to T2DM risk through disturbing various metabolic pathways. No clear evidence was found for the roles of metabolism in the associations between bisphenol exposure and T2DM.

Exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, DNA methylation and heart rate variability among non-current smokers

Kang Liu et al.

Summary: PAHs exposure is associated with differential DNA methylation, with hypermethylations at specific gene loci linked to decreased HRV indices among non-current smokers. This provides new insights into the potential impact of PAHs exposure on HRV alterations.

Thallium in aquatic environments and the factors controlling Tl behavior

Wen Zhuang et al.

Summary: The paper summarizes the research on the toxicity of thallium and its distribution, migration, and transformation mechanisms in different water environments, as well as discusses the influencing factors on thallium's environmental behavior. Shortcomings in thallium research methods are identified, and future research directions are suggested, including the need for technology to separate different oxidation states of thallium, development of advanced in situ detection technologies, and the potential application of adsorption mechanisms for thallium removal from water.
